Probably Headhurlers, or Spartan's, or Cataphracts, or Night Raiders, or Berserkers or..maybe... meh you get the point. :D
Bastarnae Mercenaries. I wasn't expecting much out of them when I hired them. I just needed some fodder for a siege. They were the first to go throught the breach in wall A where most of the enemy was, and Then I focused on getting my legionaries through the breach in Wall B. When that was done, the Mercs were still happily fighting away! One unit of them finally broke when the fight was at the city square, but I don't blame them as they had 8 or 9 men left. Then I noticed after the battle they have 2 HP, fast movement, great attack, and the same size as an average unit of legionaries.
Now I snatch them up whenever I can. In my armies that have them, my legionaries tie up the battle line, the Bastarnae Mercenaries hit the flanks, while the cavalry is snuck around and hits the rear of the flanks or runs down archers. Talk about chain routing...
Some fought for power. Some for glory. Others fought for much more...
Onward men! There's juice to be had!
Urban cohort using the Julii is already serious ownage. Even when exhausted, they could beat fresh post-Marian legionaire cohorts. They're even stronger using Temple of Mars or Vulcan as the Scipii or Brutii. Their pila is also really strong. Sometimes, enemies rout even before I charge. The only time I've had one rout was when they were reduced to less than 10 units and they stopped routing only a short time afterwards.
Numudian Cav and Pontic Ligth Cav, preety similar and perfect for my battle tactics.
Urban Cohorts are to powerfull and should not be available so early in game :p
I gave a shot to praetorian cohort that I had with one of my armies on a siege in Egypt... Put them into tower and when they were on thsoe Epic walls... Well, they cleaned up like 4 units of whatever there was upthere, and lost may be 40 guys.. Sh*t! And O looked later on casulties inflicted it was above 600... OMG. If urban cohorts are stronger (didn't try them yet) than I don't want to play against Julii! :O
re Urban Cohorts Im up to ~200BC hard/hard with the marius reforms, and 32 provinces involved in the civil war, and I cant build them yet. :)Originally Posted by Basileus
Multiplayer however is a different story.
Talk is cheap - Supply exceeds Demand.
You need huge city and urban barracks. They are barely more powerful than Praetorian cohorts in defense but have quite a good advantage in offense. They're expensive to both hire and maintain, though and need 2 turns.
I also had a lot of fun with repeating ballistas. I just kept shooting entrenched enemies. They only have the same range as post-Marian archers but they recover all troops almost all the time.
Favourite units would probably have to be either Macedonian Light lancers or Armoured Hoplites. Both can be had quite early and give a serious advantage to their respective factios.

Ah well im one turn away from an urban barracks in Pavatium. I can build Praetorian's, they take 2 turns also.Originally Posted by andrewt
