Arcani - coolest looking in game, imho, and also a deadly one.
Urban Cohort. They look absolutely awesome, and I cant help but feel sorry for whoever they're marching towards.

Probably Headhurlers, or Spartan's, or Cataphracts, or Night Raiders, or Berserkers or..maybe... meh you get the point. :D
Bastarnae Mercenaries. I wasn't expecting much out of them when I hired them. I just needed some fodder for a siege. They were the first to go throught the breach in wall A where most of the enemy was, and Then I focused on getting my legionaries through the breach in Wall B. When that was done, the Mercs were still happily fighting away! One unit of them finally broke when the fight was at the city square, but I don't blame them as they had 8 or 9 men left. Then I noticed after the battle they have 2 HP, fast movement, great attack, and the same size as an average unit of legionaries.
Now I snatch them up whenever I can. In my armies that have them, my legionaries tie up the battle line, the Bastarnae Mercenaries hit the flanks, while the cavalry is snuck around and hits the rear of the flanks or runs down archers. Talk about chain routing...
Some fought for power. Some for glory. Others fought for much more...
Onward men! There's juice to be had!
Urban cohort using the Julii is already serious ownage. Even when exhausted, they could beat fresh post-Marian legionaire cohorts. They're even stronger using Temple of Mars or Vulcan as the Scipii or Brutii. Their pila is also really strong. Sometimes, enemies rout even before I charge. The only time I've had one rout was when they were reduced to less than 10 units and they stopped routing only a short time afterwards.
Numudian Cav and Pontic Ligth Cav, preety similar and perfect for my battle tactics.
Urban Cohorts are to powerfull and should not be available so early in game :p
I gave a shot to praetorian cohort that I had with one of my armies on a siege in Egypt... Put them into tower and when they were on thsoe Epic walls... Well, they cleaned up like 4 units of whatever there was upthere, and lost may be 40 guys.. Sh*t! And O looked later on casulties inflicted it was above 600... OMG. If urban cohorts are stronger (didn't try them yet) than I don't want to play against Julii! :O
re Urban Cohorts Im up to ~200BC hard/hard with the marius reforms, and 32 provinces involved in the civil war, and I cant build them yet. :)Originally Posted by Basileus
Multiplayer however is a different story.

You need huge city and urban barracks. They are barely more powerful than Praetorian cohorts in defense but have quite a good advantage in offense. They're expensive to both hire and maintain, though and need 2 turns.
I also had a lot of fun with repeating ballistas. I just kept shooting entrenched enemies. They only have the same range as post-Marian archers but they recover all troops almost all the time.
Favourite units would probably have to be either Macedonian Light lancers or Armoured Hoplites. Both can be had quite early and give a serious advantage to their respective factios.

Ah well im one turn away from an urban barracks in Pavatium. I can build Praetorian's, they take 2 turns also.Originally Posted by andrewt

Urban Cohort. Best unit.
It beats Spartan Hoplites!
I'm only early in a Julii campaign, so I have not seen the better units yet.
I am inclined to say the wardogs, as they are rather funny to watch and incredibly powerful against Gauls plus they regenerate. But their power, regeneration and indeed existence seems ahistorical and takes some of the fun out of it.
Other than that, the one unit of Roman archers I started with has earned its weight in gold. They are amazing against the (admittedly unarmoured) Gauls - they seem even better than Samaurai archers in STW. To be honest, they seem too strong - it is as if they were good shots armed with rifles (not muskets, rifles). However, this is somewhat balanced by the ridiculous charge speeds and the appalling rate of friendly fire.
Of the AI units, the Dacian falxmen earned my respect - cleaved through a unit of hastati until my wardogs hit them - and the AI General's bodyguard cavalry are very much like the royal knights of MTW (one of the few dangerous Gaul units under the AI).
I like the scythian amazon head hunters and horse archers

agreed u should see what a group of archer behind a screen of Roman Legions can do (as for the main participant (the legion) doesnt matter if its only Hastati the archers soften anything they face)Other than that, the one unit of Roman archers I started with has earned its weight in gold. in one battle using combined arms 4 units of archers screened by just by Hastati facing a Greek army of simmiliar size (majority Armoured Hoplite) the archers killed over 600 and the only fighting the Hastati had to do was to repell one charge of the enemies General... (who after routing got an arrow in the back) was joy to watch a Hoplite slowly march up to my units and get hit by a rain of arrows and then Pila only the cav could get thru fast enough
so for my fav unit id say - anything which when combined with others makes my life easier as a general![]()
I like the dogs. Just when the opposing forces are about to get too close to your skirmishing archers and your front line troops, unleash the dogs of war.
Ties up the enemy for a bit, disorganizes him, gives you time for a few more flight of arrows followed by a Cohort charge right up their nose while the enemy stiff has the dogs chewing on their ass.Great fun.
Unto each good man a good dog
Urban Cohorts, Brutii and Temple of Mars and you got killing machines.
Also the name itself has a cool sound to it![]()

I love the Wardogs so far, i've found they're a good counter to enemy cavalry. Just loose them apon the cav to tie them up, then hit them with Infantry. They all so work great in assaulting places since they don't seem to get caught up on other units. While attacking a fairly large force guarding a gate I had a unit of merc Hoplites at the front, Halasti(or however its spelled) chucking Javelins from just behind them, then I loosed my Wardogs into the mixed. I guess with a face full of spears, javelins hurtling through the air, and Wardogs biting their ankles the enemy went nuts. Because units started routing like crazy. One of my Wardog units got 120+ kills that battle.
Since then i've brought Wardogs around with my main army, i'll use them to tie up enemies or just to chase down routing ones. I took my faction leader around with just him and 4 units of Wardogs to chase around small Carthaginian armies. Even managed a few heroic victories. But yeah, so far Wardogs are my favorite. I've only been fighting in North Africa/Sicily though.

Cataphract Archers
Most powerful unit in the game. All purpose too, as they pack a punch on the charge.

I don't care much for fancy units in my Legions.
My favorite are the rank and file troops that got the job done in my armies: Hastati for Pre-Marian era and Legionary Cohorts for Post-Marian.
