    Default Assisting allies in RTW

In MTW I was always pleasantly surprised when an ally would attack an enemy at the same time as me, and we could team up against the enemy. Sadly, this was an unbelievably rare occurence.

After the first tutorial battle, I was hoping this might be a larger part of the game.

This is just as rare in RTW!! Does anyone know any ways tricks to assist your allies? I try sitting next to enemy cities my allies are attacking but then they just leave. Do I have to camp an army next to an ally's city and wait for an enemy to assault it? :P

I still remember how the SPQR soldiers cheered when my general smashed the barbarians right in front of their eyes.

I hope if protectorates get fixed in a patch there could be more reliable joint attacks!!

Yeah I think Alliances should be more focused:

    1) Military Alliance
    2) Trade Alliance
    3) Both

or something similar - and Protectorates have to do anything you tell them and if you push them too hard they may rebel against you

i think that your allies will only help you if they are the one attackinf or being attack outher wise they just watch.

You and your ally both have to be within the red zone of the enemy. I got involved in a war with greece because my fleet was in their red zone when a senate fleet came up and attacked them.

even when my allies are in the red zone they do nothing if i am the one being attact i have watch them stand there whille i was battleing a emeny
but if they are the ones attacked and my army is in there red zone only then do the seem to help in the fight

My allies only helped once, and that was when due to some strange bug y fleet attacked the numdian fleet. The carthagians were right next to me and we won the battle.

Other then that, my allies haven't helped me once.

In my oppinion being assisted by allies just means they were in the right place at the right time. I think this should be changed in a patch. The only reason to ally with someone is to delay hostilities between your two nations for a time.... Has anyone figured out the benifit to offering trade agreements? I have read the guide on diplomacy, but still feel the diplomacy in the game is a little thin.

Also, a little off topic, but why do germanic barbarians have a phalanxe(sp)? did they really have the military know how to fight like this?

I dont expect it to be real by any means which is why i havnt posted once on unit kill rates or an overpowered faction etc. All I am expecting is a step up from MTW, which, in my oppinion is a realistic thing to ask. I am simply asking for more meat to the diplomacy system. Its great that its there, it adds a lot more to the game. However, there is no real information provided by the devs on how it ACTUALLY works. Just a lot of good speculation by members here on the org. and other forums.

I guess thats the case for a lot of the game though. The weak manual forces us to question weather the AI is good, stupid, or just lucky. We are lacking a lot of info on the inner workings of this game.

Totally agreed. I'm not sure I want equations (in fact, I'd rather not), but I would like a lot more feedback/info about the effectiveness of some actions versus others diplomacy-wise. There's so much that's ill- or un-defined. I'll be the first to admit that the guide I've been maintaining is a best-guess, what's-worked sort of thing that may turn out to be based on completely false assumptions. But, it's the best we've been able to come up with so far.

I hope my post didnt lead you to think that your guide wasnt good. In fact, its the best I have read on the game thus far.

Basically I am pretty dissapointed with any game manual now. The days of novel thick manuals is gone... Everything is up to the gamers speculation.

Yes, I don't know what happened... gone are the days of the nice thick manuals loaded with tons of very good info. MS, surprisingly, did a great job cranking out manuals for Age of Kings/AOE:TC that were loaded with great info and strategies from the developers themselves. Ah well, we do what we can.

I agree. The RTW manual is what, 55 pages?

The Combat Mission, beyond Overlord manual,(great game by the way,) has over 180 fully detailed pages. There was even a walkthrough for the tutorial. When I jumped into the game, I knew enough to get right down to business. The RTW manual was ok, but too much stuff was still left out.

I haven't seen any of the manuals mentioned in the last two posts... who makes them? Is it the developer or is it Prima/Brady/someone else?

One of the people from CA who posts here joined a thread in the Colosseum about the manual. According to him, the publishers rejected the much larger manual that CA wanted to include with the game. As seems to happen with most games these days, it was shelved because it would cost the publisher too much and not fit in the European game packaging (DVD-style boxes).

    Oops, I'm getting a bit off-topic. Apologies

I dont blame CA at all for the manual. I wonder how many of their good ideas were shot down because of the marketers. It has to be frustrating for them...
