Protectorate Rip-off

Brutii campaign.
After taking the 2nd to last Pontus city in Turkey, the Senate assigns a mission to make them a Protectorate. Well, I was really looking forward to taking them out altogether and then moving onto the Egyptians, but fine, we'll keep the Senate happy.
Next turn my treasury drops from over 500000 to 71000 for no explicable reason. The End Turn finance sheet still showed me as having roughly half a million and the budget finance sheet showed the same thing.
End turn a couple times to see what happens but my treasury stays in the 70k range and my financial sheets are STILL showing that I have about 500k. Even on the line chart chart it was showing ~500k. So, I build something. Now that changed the finance sheets to show that I do have actually 70k.
And on the next turn I get an announcement that Pontus is now the richest faction.
I look at the finance line chart and sho 'nuff, Pontus has all my money.
Well now that's just not gonna do.
Roll back a few turns; I figure screw the Senate. With that much money I'll just buy my way thru 'em.
But after taking the 2nd to last Pontus city (again) the Senate assigns a new mission - Exterminate the final Pontus settlement.
Ah yeah. Now we're talking.

Anyone else seen anything like this?
