I've had a family member die, along with a percentage of all his troops, after moving him through some sub-Saharan desert. I wonder if the game is taking into account how far he is from supplies and water? Yet another undocumented feature?

It is a well known fact that "the grays" (extraterrestrials for the unitiated) were very active during the late BC centuries, and it is highly probable this explains your troop loss.
Once they have returned, it's probably in your best interest to check each legion for any form of unusual scarring or abnormal behavior. It's a well known fact (amongst those in the know) that during this fairly primeval era the grays were sent amongst us to gather what information they could...
.... therefore it's up to you to stop them, lest you unwittingly instigate some for of CTW (that's Celestial, Total War.... again, for the unititiated).
