Any way to see move path without moving?

Sometimes I'm worried whether my army will do some crazy move due to unseen blockage, and sometimes I'm just curious - but either way, I wish somehow we could see the path an army might follow, without it actually moving yet. Does anyone know a way to see this?

RMB click-the-stack and drag will show their _projected_ path. Cancel the line with LMB. Be forewarned, I have done this and seen my army fly off into the wilderness. I've only seen it happen a few times, but it seems if too many stacks (not necessarily full ones) get bunched up in an area, the pathing will show line-X, but when it comes to moving, it somehow decides it's too crowded and chooses line-Z, which is usually a roundabout way. If things look dicey, i hit spacebar (for slow animated moves) and then try the movement, ready to hit backspace to stop them if they suddenly take their "shortcut".

Ok - here's 100% fool proof way



Right click (hold it down) on where you want to go. If you are satisfied and want to 'commit this" then let go. If not then drag it back to your original place and let go or LMB click to cancel the move.

Regardless, I think there shouldbe a possibiliy to "undo" the move - even though it's annoying and people could scout out and check things out and then "undo" the move and then would explore much mroe area. Snap, this is harder to figure out a possiblity not to have this as tI thought....

Thanks, both of you - and also, you're right Colo, it brings up a realism dilemma.

Anyway I suppose there are two causes for troops pathing unexpectedly: one is that you didn't realize the terrain would work that way, and the other is that you didn't know somebody was going to block you. It sounds like the RMB ghosting method works vs. the first but not the second - but going in slo-mo gives you a fighting chance against the second. I appreciate the tip, including the backspace to stop, motor - I've been doing fast-mo so long I stopped thinking of it as a possibility!

At first I was annoyed at the whole not being able to undo moves - but as I think about it...... people back in teh day weren't able to say "ohhh... hmm I didn't see that full stack of troops there - I guess I shouldn't have moved into the forest there.... whoops" It was more like "WHAT? MY WHOLE WESTERN ARMY IS GONE!??!!!"

I will just have to think about my moves more now...

Good point, Colo - I was thinking of "realism" in the sense of, many folks would readily abuse a very easy Undo system, including myself, sigh. But there's also that other bent to realism, as you say, LOL.

Really what it should do is allow one to see pathing vs. terrain - and then stop the army any time it unexpectedly can't do pathing vs. terrain. Namely, when you run into a blocking army.

I just had an enemy general I had bribed to my side who was half a province behind enemy lines, do a beeline straight away from my lines when I stupidly right-clicked for him to "come to daddy" (instead of testing every square of the path) due to enemies I couldn't see that were between me and him. Then, way back in enemy country, he started getting jumped. Sigh. So far he's been able to retreat to safety (fingers crossed).
