I'd have to say depth is important for all units unless you are hoping to win it on the charge. 10 deep for almost any unit will suck up almost any cavalry charge as long as the morale is there.

The deeper you go the more sustainable they are to a charge, only downfall is that they are easier to flank but if you have them in the center and flanks protected.

My little bit of experience from when I had them as mercanaries is 4 or less deep and you can quickly break up there formation but at about 6 or more the only way to beat them is to flank them.

So if you go for the bare minumum once a few die that bonus quickly dwindles

Now that I play with killing speeds reduced, the phalanx has come even more effective.

We dont have any specific information(yet) about what bonuses, if any, you get from ranks or what you get from using special abilities like Phalanx.
