Just wondering if anyone else is watching the 'season' (1 week) of programmes/films about Japan.
    They're being shown on UK's Channel 4.
From the listings I can see that "Rashomon" and "Onibaba" are being screened this coming Thursday.
They are Samurai films aren't they??

yeah, Rashomon is about a man who is attacked by two bandits when with his wife and the movie centres around them giving their accounts of the incident. Onibaba is a horror film about two peasant women who earn extra money by murdering samurai and selling their armour and weapons.
"How will we stop this man doctor?" "Oh no Sheriff he's not a man." "What is he ?" "He's evil."

Rashomon has actually little to do with the samurai, other than the fact that it's set in feudal Japan. It's not a samurai film per se, but nevertheless a Palme d'Or winner and (I hear) a great movie. I'd watch it if I could

    Both films are worth watching.....
    I especially enjoyed "Onibaba".
The demon-faced Samurai warrior was an impressive sight indeed

    One warning on Rashomon,

it is slow in many places and is more of a meaningful movie with themes and such. Don't go into it expecting fighting, as you won't see it. However, it is a very good film in my opinion. Especially the ending.

I consider Rashomon to be one of the greatest films ever. But don't expect ninja attacks or a reenactment of Sekigahara.

By the way, the main characters are a woodsman(Shimura Takashi), priest and peasant. The attack is one bandit (Mifune Toshiro) vs. a noble and his female companion.

    Just to set it straight.

guys.... let's not give away the entire movie.

if anyone comments on the ending, then I will have to delete the post. --since someone has expressed the intent to watch it within the next week or whenever.

-and it is not necessarily depressing... just depends on your outlook on life.
