Hi,
This happend last night and confirmed my thoughts on the overall depth of this game.
Playing as the Selucids ( Hard, Hard ) I spent the first 20 turns building up my income buidlings, building alliances and bribing the odd Egyptian army that wandered too close. By the time I had finished I was allied with Pontus, Parthia, Armenia, Egypt & The Geek cities. I had plenty of cash, good income from all cities, and an average army.
My plans were to take the Ptolmies out of the picture by taking Alexandria, thus drastically reducing their trade income, and then consolidating asia minor by taking pontus out of the picture. So I began major troop production in order to acheive these two immediate goals, until catastrophe struck in about 5-10 turns.
1st Armenia attacks Parthia in order to extend their empire. knowing that Armenia were also allied with Pontus (Another of my allies), and Parthia were only allied with me I supported Armenia. I secured my border with Parthia and things were looking ok.
2nd Egypt declare war and invade, I bribed Sidon & conquered Jerusalem in 3 turns and Moved my main army down in order to take Alex.
3rd And this was the real kicker, Pontus allied with Egypt (I had seen about 3 or 4 Egyptian diplomats heading up that way & toyed with the idea of assinating them). Immediatly the Pontus faction leader attacked me in Taurus with a full stack, and the heir attacked Hatas(?!?) whilst my main army was besieged in Jerusalem by Egyptian family members.
4th Greece allied with Pontus, because they had a common enemy in Macedon, and attacked the province above Halicarnacuss.
I managed to build an army to fight off Pontus in Taurus but ended up losing Hatas, I then had the mother of all battles in the Taurus Mountain pass with a 4,000 + Pontus army (Huge unit size), and my 2,600 strong Selucid army from which I emerged victorious. Unfortunately all of my panic troop building, and indiscriminate attempts at army bribing have left me in the red. Pontus keep sending full stacks at me, they also are preparing another two full stacks in Hatas. Egypt are beseiging Jerusalem after I sent an army to try and take Alex, in a crazy attempt to try and make a quick buck, that was promptly destroyed. My position is now exteremly precarious.
I have to say that I find the diplomacy aspect of this game fascinating. The above goes to show that even whilst things can look so good, things can change on a whim. TBH I had not explored the full range of possiblities with regards to Alliances, I am exteremly glad I did.
As you can see I enjoyed myself as I written this droning post about it, I finally crawled off to bed at 3 am.
