Other games play like this... you must unlock the factions by winning with others. It's mostly seen in fighting type games, though. I don't think I've seen it in a strategy game before.
I guess, to each their own.
It's nice to have the choice, however. I wanted to be the Germans first but was "bullied" (too strong a word I know ) into choosing one of three Roman factions. I wanted to start lower down with the poorer quality troops of the barbarians and then gleefully select the Romans much later.
Doesn't matter now though because I completed a short campaign as Julii and am now playing the Germans so I'm as happy as Larry. But I wholeheartedly agree with Arrowmaker in that I bought the game so give me access to all the factions!!! Muhahahahaha!!
