:sips tea, takes feet off desk and and starts to think RTW again: In MTW and STW archers deeper than two ranks in close formation, or three ranks in loose, had an accuracy penalty becasue the guys in the front of the formation blocked their view. If you had the unit set up deep enough you would see that the people in the back didn't even shoot.
In RTW even units that are ten ranks deep will fire with no reduction in accuracy, as in they still do the same amount of damage to their target. The fact they kill their friends is an issue with friendly fire being daft, not a penalty as per those in previous games. Apparantly in STW and MTW the archers could 'see' that there were firends in front of them, and so they wouldn't shoot if they were likely to hit them. In RTW they are totally blind to anything except thier target. That's why missile units are causing so many friendly casualties in RTW. It makes fire at will something of a big gamble.
