Frogbeastegg's Guide to Total War: Shogun II. Please note that the guide is not up-to-date for the latest patch.
Phalanx is one of several aspects left 'in research' with only a cursory note in the guide. I decided it wasn't worth delaying the whole guide for the sake of a few paragraphs on a couple of subjects.

Impressive work, Frogbeategg. That was the first I've heard of the spy and diplomat travelling together. The economic advice was first-rate, too.
Spears in general are just confused and confusing right now. Glad I'm not an infantry player.![]()
I am a little confused about one point: There's no penalty for archers in deep formations -- except they kill their comrades who are in front of them?
:sips tea, takes feet off desk and and starts to think RTW again: In MTW and STW archers deeper than two ranks in close formation, or three ranks in loose, had an accuracy penalty becasue the guys in the front of the formation blocked their view. If you had the unit set up deep enough you would see that the people in the back didn't even shoot.
In RTW even units that are ten ranks deep will fire with no reduction in accuracy, as in they still do the same amount of damage to their target. The fact they kill their friends is an issue with friendly fire being daft, not a penalty as per those in previous games. Apparantly in STW and MTW the archers could 'see' that there were firends in front of them, and so they wouldn't shoot if they were likely to hit them. In RTW they are totally blind to anything except thier target. That's why missile units are causing so many friendly casualties in RTW. It makes fire at will something of a big gamble.
Sorry about the typos; I've done some 30ish pages this evening alone.![]()

Is this the proper thread for reporting things which need correcting, Froggy? Or do you want them somewhere else?

Oh, bung the usual complaints, suggestions and so on in the guide thread. I thought I'd advertise here in case people didn't pay much attention to the guide forum.
EDIT: bah, my tired brain. Thanks, khelvan.

I fully excuse any such mistake. Congrats the first of many guides, i hope, akin to the quality of your MTW ones. Very useful.

Thank you, Captain Fishpants. I really do feel as if I have only just skimmed the surface; RTW has so many unknowns, so many aspects, so many options, and so much to do. I look forward to discovering what I have missed, and seeing what you polish the game into with 1.2.
