Playing as the Julii (hard/hard) my faction leader's wife was unable to bear him a son. Numerous daughters were married off to various elderly losers in a desperate attempt to provide family members to govern my growing empire. Finally my youngest daughter was courted by a promising young man with several command stars and good management skills. I pegged this fellow to be my heir and sent him campaigning around Gaul destroying the barbarian scum and act as a floating governor for several settlements. After several years, the Gauls being on their last legs, I was ready to bring him home and pass on my beneficial retainers before the faction leader croaked of old age. I set him up with a small but powerful battle group and sent him South to the coast so he could grab a ship back to the capital. Unfortunately the Gauls had gathered together thier remaining armies and were waiting in ambush with a full stack. Surounded in the forest my heir and every one of his soldiers was butchered. My young daughter is now a widow with no children to bring her comfort, and my most promising heir is a 57 year old geezer.
