Alliances are not worth the paper they are written on. You always get backstabbed. Besides the AI is reluctant to agree to anything above Trade Rights and a standard Alliance to the player, and you'll have to offer something VERY substantial to even get them to consider it.

Its not worth it really in my view.

I've had alliances last well over 100 years once I got reciprocal Military Access. The trick to getting it is having the cash on hand to pay for it. At times it will cost you 16.000+, but it's well worth it because it cements the alliance very solidly.

Thats great if your roman but i have had money trouble with every other faction i've played (something to do with large standing armies and city projects :D ). I have to agree with Emporer alliances seem rarely worth the effort even if you had the money to afford it.

Alliances only seem to be of use if you are not in contact with your ally (they can't attack.) This seemed to keep the Romans off my back as Germania. Trade agreements are useful, but alliances are of questionable value. The one plus about asking for an alliance: if they refuse, it means they are going to attack. I use requesting an alliance as an Early Warning System. In RTW the best defense is a good offense...

Yout diplomat needs to have a courtesan and a dancer in his retinue to break the ice for the deal

Military Access costs....10k+ is what I usually pay but then I rarely bother to haggle...

However you need to have a very solid relation already...I've gotten it a few time and usually with what I like to call client states...meaning states I support with a lot of money and sometimes even regions because they buffert the romans/egyptians (which always seem to end up my real opponents...most often thought at the same time allies or ceastfire)...However you need to have a very stabile economy able to dish out a few 10k ever now and then to do this....however all roman fractions and at least the egyptians, selucide and greeks all can get these resources...
