Dave Murray, definately.
GARCIN: I "dreamt," you say. It was no dream. When I chose the hardest path, I made my choice deliberately. A man is what he wills himself to be.
INEZ: Prove it. Prove it was no dream. It's what one does, and nothing else, that shows the stuff one's made of.
GARCIN: I died too soon. I wasn't allowed time to - to do my deeds.
INEZ: One always dies too soon - or too late. And yet one's whole life is complete at that moment, with a line drawn neatly under it, ready for the summing up. You are - your life, and nothing else.

And others I can't think of right now.
My 3 favourite guitarists, in no particular order-
Jimmy Page
Dave Gilmour
Jimi Hendrix
I would say that Pagey just about edges it, due to the fact that he's written about 3 million of the best riffs ever...
I adore Gilmour's melodicism and soundscapes, however. He can make me feel more than any other guitarist.

There are times I wish they’d just ban everything- baccy and beer, burgers and bangers, and all the rest- once and for all. Instead, they creep forward one apparently tiny step at a time. It’s like being executed with a bacon slicer.

The Living End bassist (the guy is amazing and plays on an upright bassist)
Rage against the Machines bassist.
with bassists then John Deacon wins hands down!

Ah, now, bass...
I'm a really big Jaco Pastorius fan.
Cliff Burton from Metallica was also an incredible bassist. It was after his death that the band started going down hill...

Anyone who grew up in the late 70s/early 80s... is there anyone new out there these days who can compete with the sheer notes-per-second velocity of guitarists like Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmstein, Kirk Hammett, (and even good old Eddie VH in his prime), etc...?
I lost track of the guitar scene when I got married (ten years ago), but the few times I catch "rock" stations these days, they're full of bands that sound like Exact copies of each other. And it sounds like someone in marketing said, "Say goodbye to solo guitar..."
"Die Wahrheit ruht in Gott / Uns bleibt das Forschen." Johann von Müller
Tim Reynolds is pretty fast and a good soloist.
I agree with you that many sound like copies these days and soloing is not so important anymore. It's been over 10 years since there was any explosion of good rock guitarists and originality. There is still good ones out there, you have to look...hard...as far as rock/alt rock guitarists anyway, don't know about metal, I stopped following it when it became only about huge power chords and screaming :)
