    In fact -

    Kyoto now by Bad Religion

It’s a matter of prescience -no, not the science fiction kind
It’s all about ignorance, and greed, and miracles for the blind
    The media parading, disjointed politics
Founded on petrochemical plunder, and we’re it’s hostages
If you stand to reason you’re in the game
The rules might be elusive but our pieces are the same
And you know if one goes down we all go down as well
The balance is precarious as anyone can tell
    This world’s going to hell
Don’t allow this mythologic hopeful monster to exact it’s price
    Kyoto now!
We can’t do nothing and think someone else will make it right
You might not think it matters now but what if you are wrong
You might not think there’s any wisdom in a fucked up punk rock song
But the way it is cannot persist for long
A brutal sun is rising on our sick horizon
It’s in the way we live our lives
Exactly like the double edge of a cold familiar knife
And supremacy weighs heavy on the day
It’s never really what you own but what you threw away
And how much did you pay?
Don’t allow this mythologic hopeful monster to exact it’s price
    Kyoto now!
We can’t do nothing and think someone else will make it right
In your dreams you saw a steady state a bounty for eternity
    Silent screams
But now the wisdom that sustains us is in full retreat
    Watch out!
Don’t allow this mythologic hopeful monster isn’t worth the risk
    Kyoto now!
We can’t have vision for the future if it can’t be fixed
    Alien
We need a fresh and new religion to run our lives
    Hand in hand
The arid torpor of inaction will be our demise
    Oh, kyoto now!

INEZ: Prove it. Prove it was no dream. It's what one does, and nothing else, that shows the stuff one's made of.
GARCIN: I died too soon. I wasn't allowed time to - to do my deeds.
INEZ: One always dies too soon - or too late. And yet one's whole life is complete at that moment, with a line drawn neatly under it, ready for the summing up. You are - your life, and nothing else.

Um, JAG, I think we get the picture now. The thread was about favourite lines, not entire albums. Let alone juvenile strings of four letter words...

The Canadian Railroad Trilogy by Gordon Lightfoot celebrates the 100th anniversary of the building of the Trans-Canadian railroad:

The song of the future has been sung.
All the battles have been won.
On the mountain tops we stand
All the world at our command.
We have opened up the soil
With our teardrops and our toil.

I've got to say I have never seen so much negativity expressed as in these "best lyrics". There are a lot of depressing songs in this thread. You all spend your time brooding when not here, don't you? Worry not so much, one day you'll be humming songs like The Rubber Tree Song with its plucky, determined ant! I'm just kidding in case that thought worries some of you.

all these are translated because english music just sucks (just kidding)

btw, my favourite band CMX, the name is short for 'cloaka maxima'
    CMX:
    "the winged one"
....fly my mind, fly, you can go, I'm not afraid at all
and the right wing is white, and the left is black
and day is sun gold, and night is cold, ligthless....
....you are frightening like the flame of the spring, you are beautiful as a blooming tree....

    "beauty betrays"
...if the two fall in front of beauty, worshipping eachother in the night, if the two fall in the front of beauty, it betrays them, laughing....

    "folks and peoples"
    ....world is dream, common tale
the pipes ascend to heavens, factories push fog, machines manufacture happiness, amidst the steel hulls lie human junk....
...so begin the battles for faith, for things to die for, even if you were wrong, alien in the eyes of your time....
...folks and peoples breath within me and wish freedom, folks and peoples love within me and wish life, folks and peoples breath within me and wish freedom, folks and peoples love within me and wish life....
...pain is real, city an alliance against dark, news are prayers, so that tomorrow might come....

    "rust"
....oh look how slowly, everything goes, but years are short, and when the moon and sun are together in the sky, I gather up everything on my yard and burn, yes, books and papers, perhaps, furnitures and memories, all the lies that come in front of life, all the good that prevents from seeing, that is rust, smoke kisses the ruins, you know how it feels like, to warm your hands in the ashes of burnt homes....
...hey, look how slowly it rains again... the dust on the mountains, perhaps even these murderers hands are looking for a head to to touch, and feel the weight of world...
    ...that is rust...
...the smoke kisses the ruins, you know what it feels like, to warm your hands in the ashes of burnt homes... the smoke kisses the ruins, you know what it feels like, to warm your hands in the ashes of burnt homes....

Gregoshi, one month from now we will only have 3 hours of sunlight. Right now, it gets pitch dark outside 5pm.

Besides, pop is for lil girls and girlish boys.

Yeah, don't you just love 'em? I always root for NZ when they play, though I care more about the game (brilliant set-ups, long runs, hard-fought tries) than about who wins. The tougher the game, the better though.

I like the story behind it, too. Te Raupahara was set upon by enemies and hid in a storage pit for sweet potatoes. When he heard sounds above him and the lid was lifted he feared for his life, but as he struggled against the blinding sunlight he recognized the hairy legs of an allied chief come to his recue. Te Raupahara climbed out and improvised the Ka Mate ('we're going to die') haka on the spot, out of gratitude to the sun and his saviour.

Te nei te tan-ga-ta puru huru!...
(This is the man, so hairy!...)

Adrian - d'you come from/have you lived in NZ? Te Raupahara actually swept down through the region I live in.

Never been there, one of my big frustrations. I played rugby as a student though. I'm 1.98 tall, square built, ugly, dumb, sexist and (back then) able to hold my liquor. All the qualifications, really. Sadly, rugby isn't big here and I don't think we have a national team. It's something for students, like rowing.

From what I read about him, he must have been a formidable character. Things like the All Black Haka are a good way to honour the Maori legacy, as opposed to much of the politically correct cr@p these days about native people as innocent, child-like victims of western genocide, etcetera. Keeps the memory of their pride alive, as opposed to all the whining about their demise.
