Question By the gods, this is maddness!!!

    First, Hello to you all.

I was playing as Eygpt and some bandits appeared only one unit of archers, so I send a general, by himself, to attack them. I think archers, ha, run 'em down, so I charge my chariots into them. None of the enermy died in the charge . Then things get really bad my general dies and my men slaughted. One chariot survived.

A few turns later a send another general by himself to attack. This time I think loose formation and pick them to bits with arrows. It works, for a bit, then, as you may have guessed, my general dies. I then charged them and broke them and won.

So, it cost me two promising young generals kill 160 archers and guess what, 19 of them are still sitting there mocking me.

How do use chariots, without them getting slaughted.

First off - welcome to the org.

Second - those chariots are rather brittle. In my first game as the egyptians I did the exact same thing you describe and found out, that chariots kinda suck. Funny since they seem so powerful when the opponent has them...

Egypts big advantage is their booming economy and population. Use armies made of archers and spear infantry with a bit of cavalry to chase routers. I've modded the game to remove the axemens "invisible" armor, but if you haven't you have a unit there that can take on most romans without too much trouble.

    Have fun.
Nope - no sig what so ever.

Thanks for the welcome and the info.

I think things went wrong because the archer have a sort of loose disorganised formation like desert archers in MTW. So when you charge them they move out of the way. But, in one of my rome games in used light auxila against some british chariots and they got slaughted even though they have a bonus against chariots and a loose disorganised formation.

if i had seen my lone gen cut down so easily i wouldnt of sent another lol but i have encountered something similar in that my grrek hoplites get charged head on from the front by cav and the cav smashes straight through!!!!!!!!!!

    it's not just Chariots

I charged some Sarmatian Cav in after some Archers - I lost all but 8 of the Sarmatians after a few charges and the archers lost like 12 or so. I charged a non-missile infantry and they went down like grass. I don't know what the deal is - it's as if skirmishers counter cav....

It was pretty stupid of me to send another lone general at them. But it works if they are not command chariots. I like to take risks with my generals so they will get good traits.

I know, but for me I'll take him with a few more untis if I'm fighting a strong enemy and let your general be the first one followed by a unit of cav. It works for me should work for you guys.

I must admit I look on bandits/brigands as a golden opportunity , firstly if of the right type to bribe to get cheap extra troops often in an advantageous postion, and second if not of the right type , send a few units just enough to beat them , but not generals , use your captains in the fight at the end and hope you will get a promotion to general. I've been quite successful with this as well as having some fun battles. Love those german screeching women) Equiite (or velite) captains in particular seem great as they as reallly good as eliminating the routing enemy.

it may be a chariot issue. I posted about this in the bug thread, but basically I think there's an issue with generals and chariots re: survivablity. Specifically, I have a tendency to fling rocks with siege engines at enemy chariot generals and kill the general first shot. I wonder if the normal code for "general is almost always last one killed" or whatever isn't taking into account the general when it offs the other guys on his chariot or something?

hopefully we'll know more soon :)

I think the general has a much higher chance of dieing from seige. I was seiging a greek town as the romans and their heavy onager fired one shot, over the walls, and it hit my general in one shot - and it was at its maximum range!

This has happened to me many times, it must be a bug or something!

Some of the Egyptian archer units can be quite nasty in melee... Actually, there are a number of ranged units that have good melee stats. Ranged units can be harder to kill off with cav charges than infantry...because you rarely get a flank. The world can be a bit upside down in RTW compared to historical use: archers are a bit powerful both in melee and missile lethality, phalanx a bit easy to mow down, cav is strong relative to infantry (in a historical sense), chariots are quick and turn fast, elephant units are oversized and overly durable.

There is more to matchups than just numbers and unit types - the valor, armor, and weapons upgrade, along with command stars all come into play.

You don't say what level of any of these aspects any of the units are, so it makes me think that they archers might have been 'pumped up'

The archers had no experience, no upgrades and the general had no command stars. My general with 3 stars and no experience and no upgrades.
