    Default City/Province naming convention

    Greetings, everyone.

We need to continue our discussion about the nature of province and city names. We have to come to a consensus about how we will name them. Are we going with Latin names for everything, with names appropriate for the culture of the city/province c. 270 BC, or with names appropriate for the original ethnic origin of the city/province?

We should decide on this soon so that we can have this complete for our first public release. Please add your vote.

Excellent poll khelvan. I think it should be between #3 #4. It will be a little bit hard to find the original ethnic names for each region.

    Vote for Latin name.

    My reasons:
    1. Title of the game - "Rome: Total War".
    2. In many cases it's just impossible to find local names.
    3. Names in different languages will bring just extra anarchism in game.

can't vote... when will I be 'qualified' to vote in polls?

but I ask to definitely NOT give 'all latin names' .. me not like it . I like the founding ethnic original name idea though the controling faction's name around 270BC is also a very nice hypothesis and perhaps the most feasible. I (mentally) 'vote' for a mix of these last 2 options since sometimes the controling factions for 270BC simply adopted the city's original name. If we find difficulty in some cases we can always adopt what we have
"I swear so soon as age will permit I will use fire and steel to arrest the destiny of rome" - Hannibal Barca at the age of 9, ca238BC

"Against those who have incurred the wrath of God" - Genseric, King of the Vandals, ca455CE, replying to his helmsman whither he should steer. His fleets now yearly sailed from his new capital Karthadast. The whole of Africa, Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica and the Balearic Islands quickly fell in his hands. Then he sacked Rome. For 14 days and nights Genseric pillaged the city and returned to Karthadast, carrying much booty and many thousand captives, the empress and her two daughters. The city and the people were spared. Yet, they are the 'vandals'.

So, you can post but not vote in the poll? How silly. I will add your "mental" vote to the tally (hopefully this describes your voting method and not your state of mind ;).

I'm for using Latin names; the game (and actual history) is too fluid to use the the second or third options.
