Default "And when he gets to Heaven..."

"And when he gets to heaven,
To St. Peter he will tell,
    Another soldier reporting, sir -
I've served my time in hell."

You may or may not have seen this on the opening mission of Medal of Honor: Frontline, the mission of the D-Day landings. Or you may have seen it on my sig.

I really like it (the quote that is). Sadly, I don't know where it is from (I doubt it is from Medal of Honor). It may be from Winston Churchill, but I looked it up (various quote services) and they had nothing about Churchill saying that.

I want to find out who said/wrote that. I challenge anyone who knows (and can pretty much prove it) to tell me. Please? There won't really be an award, 'cept maybe I'll cite you in my sig or something.

    Cheers, guys.

    - Marine Grave inscription on Guadalcanal, 1942

    written by a anonymous marine?

Found it on this page http://www.military-quotes.com/military-poems.htm,

maybe you already knew this and wanted a specific person...

I have studied Churchill extensively and that quote does not seem like his style at all. I would say the anonymous grave marker is a pretty good bet.

Another USMC quote, this one about Iwo Jima - "I ain't afraid of dying, I've already been to Hell".
"I request permanent reassignment to the Gallic frontier. Nay, I demand reassignment. Perhaps it is improper to say so, but I refuse to fight against the Greeks or Macedonians any more. Give my command to another, for I cannot, I will not, lead an army into battle against a civilized nation so long as the Gauls survive. I am not the young man I once was, but I swear before Jupiter Optimus Maximus that I shall see a world without Gauls before I take my final breath."

    Senator Augustus Verginius

Well, it seems that though Churchill is sometimes credited with it, it is most likely anonymous.

Thanks go to (in no order):

I shall update my sig to reflect this.

    I thought the saying was
"And when he gets to Heaven
To Saint Peter he will tell
    One more Marine reporting Sir
I've served my time in hell"

And it was inscribed on the Marine Graves at either Guadacanal or Iwo Jima.
Sorry to dig up an old topic.

I've seen it attributed to a Sgt. James A Donahue, 1st Marine Division which was also Lt. Gen "Chesty" Puller's division :)
