I voted for the general's body guard... Not the most fun or fancy... But definately the most useful, both in early and late game...

I'd have preferred to have said the late First Cohort, so in their absence I had to pick the Urban Cohort.

For me the game is about my Legions marching across the known world, meeting foreign and exotic peoples, then stabbing them a bit and grinding them under their caligae. I don't want to play the Gauls, the Greeks or the Parthians, I just want a varied diet.
