Default Sometimes the campaign AI does nothing...

OK, here's a picture taken of the Julii relatively late game:

As you can see between myself (Scipii) and the Brutii the Julii are somewhat crammed into their homelands. Neveetheless they are at war with the Britons, Greeks, Thrace and the Egyptians and have military access with myself and the Brutii. Therefore, there is still opportunity for the Julii in all directions.

However, and this is the perplexing aspect of the campaign AI, they simply haven't done anything with their armies for the last 50+ years!! All they've done is plod back and forward across the top of their small domain...

    Crazy.

Edit: Picture now open to the public.

Loads troops in Arettium, i wonder does the AI factions get to have unlimited money or something to pay the cost for there units???

The julii are not gonna attack i think unless theres a border that opens with a non roman faction. An option for the julii is to attack that east part through naval warfare but i gues the AI doesent do it because its to far away.

I think Jeanne is right... I had a game in which the Brutii had an alliance with Macedon (who controlled the most of the Balkan and Greece) and the Greek Cities were already destroyed in Greece. The Brutii didn't do anythin for 30 years, until their alliance with Macedon broke.
So the AI is programmed to attack land areas, but to a much lesser extent areas oversea. I think it has to do with the complexity of using boats to drop armies. In MTW this was easier and you saw a lot more long distance invasions by the AI.

Well, i my game playing Scipii the Julii and the Brutii have been at war with Gaul and Greece since the beginning of the game and did exacly nothing like the first poster said, even though those are the ONLY factions they bordered. The Julii actually sailed west and conqured Orca(?) in spain and sardinia but didn't even touch the Po valley. The Brutii just camped their massive armies outside of apollonia, pacing back and forth. Both faction did have large navies though, after Egypt attacked me. Maybe they're just concentrating on naval or something.

Yeah, but it doesn't make any sense. The Julii are at war with nearly every faction who's left and they have military alliances with both myself and the Brutii. They also have a multitude of fleets at their disposal. There's no sense in remaining bottled up in their homelands for 50+ years.

another 20 years along the lines, and still the Julii haven't done anything about leaving their territory despite the wars they're in and the military access they have with Brutii and myself (Scipii). It really does appear that surrounding a Roman ally makes them stagnant...

Maybe you might consider gifting them a territory to open up a corridor for them to attack someone. It might help to give them a little help or those armies will be there later when you go for Rome. Sometime sto me the AI appears stuck in thought. Even consider gifting them something as a border and see them pump money into it, especially if you have no interest in expanding that way sort like for example the big African or eastern Europe Territories. Not knwing your map, but take Numidia gift it to them and let them go after Gaetulia and Sahara. Big empty lands or even form a wall by gifting them Pripet, Scythia and lettinmg them go east and deal ith those Hosre folk while you get the rich Med Beltway with secure flanks...use the AI if you can. I use Julii against the Gauls that way while I as Scipii concentrate on Iberia/Spain. Gifted Aquitania and Lugdinensis which I can take later as I wanted to soley concentrate on things west of Carthage and South of Narbonesis for now. Eygpt to big for me to tackle yet and as Scipii that move sent Julii Straight NorthWest.

If the A.I. Romans know that eventually they will have to fight other Roman factions {which human players know will happen} then perhaps they are merely too worried the civil war will happen whilst they're armies are abroad and lose their home territories . I have noticed that the A.I. is far more careful about the safety of its' capital and main cities {and noticed it actually does shift its' designated capital when it seems advantagous} than it was in MTW {remember how you knew the Byzantines would lose Constantinople early no matter how buffed it was and be crippled there after ?!} .
I am pleased C/A fixed this for the A.I. .
Note , in real life , some nations let opportunities go by and miss the chances to prosper , so it isn't much worry for me . What does bug me is the speed of expansion , I think I'll try doubling the time require to bild troops and see if that slows things down : I like to have a nice long game , not a race to see who can become invincable the first .
    I miss Glorius Achievments

I'm not going to change for the other three .

Interesting idea Ericostermann. At the moment, however, I do not have any available provinces, which if given to the Julii, would link existing Julii provinces to a warring neighbour.

Nevertheless I will try selling a province to the Julii, maybe the next province I capture from the Britons, as I'm rarely able to contain Briton cities due to my capital being in N Africa.
