Default Sallying Forth - In/Out of City?

I have a memory of sallying from a city and having my troops placed *outside* of the city. This was quite some time ago.

Yet, in my recent play, this hasn't occurred. I "sally forth" but find my troops placed within the City, rather than outside the walls.

Is it my imagination? Is there some situation where the troops are placed outside the walls, rather than within?

If so, is there anyway to know which will occur; and is there anyway to control this?

Default Re: Sallying Forth - In/Out of City?

I would postulate that reinforcements might well be outside the walls.

Incidentally, it is possible to get some units to start outside the gates - useful if a proper sally is in order, and the whole bunching up to get through the gates is a problem (oppurtunity for nasty premature assault by the AI) The number of men that can start off outside is limited, they have to be able to be in quite a thin line - and if the walls are too thick, no deal. So most infantry can start off just outside when the walls are wooden, but if the walls are stone, only really small units like arcani can. (Seems rather appropiate - a crack commando unit shinning down the wall on ropes in the dead of night, and hiding waiting to attack from an unexpected quarter.)
Don't have any aspirations - they're doomed to fail.

    Rumours...
