Your favorite character in Sengoku Jidai Japan? :D

Everybody is welcomed to say whatever they want.

I vote for Uesugi Kenshin. He differentiates other daimyos in many ways:

(1) He does not want to expand. All other daimyos just hope to destroy the neighbors.

(2) He helps other daimyos upon request. He doesn't take reward as others do. If you need some help, go ask Kenshin. Even Takeda Shingen tells his son so.

(3) He does not attack the weak. For example, he refused to take advantage of the doomed Takeda after Shingen's death. But if it was Shingen he would be very happy to do the contrary.

(4) He does not have a lot of wives. Well he has no wife! He dedicated himself to buddism since young and did not marry. There is rumor that he actually likes "man" Homosexuality between men were not too uncommon in Sengoku Jidai Japan.

You can say as a strongly religious person, the un-married Uesugi Kenshin lives in his own imagination. However, isn't this a cool style in this son-murder-father war period?

If I had to pick a favorite, it might be Baba Mino no kami Nobufusa of the Takeda. A loyal and gifted retainer whom Shingen regarded as a wise councillor, Nobufusa is also supposed to have had a sense of humor. According to one story (who knows if it is true), Shingen had an aversion to green catapillars. If Nobufusa happened to find one, he would take the opportunity to tease Shingen with it.
Nobufusa was also exceptional in that he was never wounded in battle prior to Nagashino. This is ironic, since the previous holder of the title Mino no Kami within the Takeda, Hara Toratane, who was wounded many,many times over the course of his career. Wherever Shingen fought, Nobufusa was likely to be nearby.
Nobufusa's luck held out for most of the Battle of Nagashino, and he may well have survived even that slaughter unscathed had he not turned around when the Takeda were fleeing and plunged into the enemy.

Another very interesting figure is Hojo Genan, a younger son of Hojo Soun who lived during the reigns of Soun, Ujitsuna, Ujiyasu, Ujimasa, and, finally, Ujinao. Genan, or Nagatsuna, is said to have been schooled at one point in Kyoto and became known for his cultural abilities as well as his martial prowess. He assisted in the upbringing of Ujiyasu, Ujimasa, and Ujinao, and was considered a pillar of the Hojo house. He finally died in 1589, having lived to be over ninety - and yet not having to live to see the fall of Odawara the next year. As one Japanese author put it, 'if the life of a man in those days was fifty years, then you could say that Hojo Genan lived two lifetimes.'

Hmmmm...it's have to be Tokugawa Ieyesu (sp?) mostly because he managed to hold his small province throuhg so much turmoil and best the best (for a while anyway). I'm not so much interested in him becoming Sogun, just the early part of his career.

Tokugawa Ieyasu because of his intelligence and patience. He managed to survive an era of war surrounded by vastly more powerfull adversaries (in the begining) and come out victorious thanks to both his military and political skills.

Of all samurai, I would have to choose Sô Sukekuni, or some Gempei war figure... But as far as Sengoku Jidai is concerned, the choice is hard indeed. Maybe I would still go for Shingen, for being the only Buddhist archbishop I know of to cook criminals alive. (Again we're worshipping violence...)

picking Daimyo is hard.. they are special for different reasons.

Mori Motonari for his diplomatic skills, Takeda Shingen for his strategic prowess, Toyotomi Hideyoshi for his extreme rise to power, Tokugawa for obvious reasons.

I don't pick favorites anyway.

Hard very hard.

I know that the great general named Terazawa was one of the generals of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

But as for the whole, I think that my vote goes to the good Tokugawa Ieyasu who was had great political and military skills and was cunning to have the shogunate after Hideyoshi died.
