Default I am Egypts' protectorate-- anyone else?

As Seleucids(cool faction btw) i'm fighting parthians and egyptians about 265bc taken Sidon from Egypt.

I notice my diplomat beside an egyptian one, so I figure lets see if I can get more money for my map( as an aside I don't think you should be able to do this with someone you are war with).

I offer my map for 10k, the Egyptians counter with they will give me 14k if I give Sidon+ map + become a protectorate. !

Knowing that the protectorate thing the other way leads to a rapid loss of denarii , I think this could be fun ... you know getting all Egypts money as their protectorate. They give me full military access , alliance . I'm their protectorate. I loose Sidon but nothing else afaik.

Its now 260bc , I started wars with Pontus and the Greeks as my troops had routed Parthia already and I just got Rhodes. All my good troops have left the Egyptian area. I've used the egyptian navy as allies to attack Pontus and The Greeks.

I see no sign of getting Egypts money(other that from the deal). Nevertheless it hasn't cost me anything except giving Sidon back , now I have a secure border. I presume I should be paying for protection but see no evidence for this. Not a bad deal I think. Later on I'll bring the egyptians into war with the romans and anyone else I can think of.

Anyone else have experience at being someone else's protectorate?

When I played as Carthage I was under the Greco-Egytian protecterate. It was fourmed due to an odd twist of fate that in the course of 3 turns made Egypt love me (after 50 years of bloddy war!) and Greec suddenly owning my soul.

I tried to become allies with the Egyptians, since we were the two world powers, aside from Gaul (yea, they have like 1/4 the continent!), but they said, that it wouldnt be convient for them... two turns later, they blocade all of my ports on the South (about 4 of them), and have been blockading them for over 20 turns now.

Then they at last reached my outer eastern undeveloped cities, and we fought. I slaughtered over 1,000 of them in one battle, that's all we've had so far. Some nice guys they are. So I'm going to ship another massive fleet to their lands down South, about 20,000 soliders (plus, you got it, Spartan Hoplites, who will spearhead the assault ). hehehe

I tend to leave some of Egyptian cities to the rebels if my capital is Roman and therefore in and around Italy and there is no chance that the ai side could get them. I certainly do that with Numidian cities in the far south of the map. Those cities are too poor and rebellious to keep.

I believe I did become Egpyt's protectorate as a Greek side - either Greek cities or Seleucids - they attacked me two turns later.

in my recent cart game i became the gauls protectorate - for about 3 turns ;)

they basically shot themselves in the foot. all it did was giving me time to prepare my attack.

on a somehow related issue: are alliances cast in stone if you have and grant military access?

i have an alliance and ma with greece and dacia and im very suprised that they have not tried to backstab me once (playing on vh). i dont even defend my borders with them (and i have direct land borders with both + dacia is huge!)

I assume it's generally better not to have big armies at the borders to threaten your allies. It might give them ideas....

In real life, that is true, but in there, I always keep on my border cities around 2,000 men as a garrison defense, just incase they get any bright idea's of trying to claim my land for themselves.

Alliance schmalliance. They're not worth the paper they're written on - and they're not even written on paper...

It may depend on difficulty level (campaign), but on v.hard and even hard they'll make an alliance with you one turn and attack you the next summer.

I believe in Hatcat's post (stickied here ) He mentioned amassing forces near other factions borders does have an effect. Particularly in trying to gain a protectorate! Maybe your alliance won't last as long as they could?!?

Being someones protectorate means you get full alliance and military access rights, a bit more than just an alliance.

So the question is , is this type of alliance better or will the egyptians just knife me in the back.

I will not mass my troops at egypts or provoke them and we''ll see what happens. Its ok to 255bc so far.
