I could be wrong but I'm almost sure roads do'nt do a thing on islands. For one they are all too short to make a difference minus the Egyptian island of Salamis. Everytime I built a road/paved/highway and looked at the potential increased income there was none. Sicily is a little different as there are 3 other cities on that island to trade with.

If there is a difference it is so little that you will neve get your money back for building it.

Plain roads don't improve trade. They just give increased army movement.
Paved roads give improved land trade only (about 2X original value).
Refer to Quietus's economics guide for more details.
I don't find the slightly improved movement necessary at all for island provinces like Rhodes or Kydonia, so in general I spend my denarii elsewhere.

This is a great question that I've been wondering about for quite some time. My understanding is that roads only improve trade between other provinces that you are physically connected too, and therefore they don't make much sense on islands. Although one does see the little wagons making their way from the city to the port, sea trade is, as far as I have been able to determine, uneffected by building roads. So on balance, there is no reason to build them for troop movement because the islands are small, and there is no reason to build them for trade because they aren't connected to land trade partners, therefore don't build them, upgrade your port instead.

I appreciate this is kinda glib, but its worth building them just to see all the wagons going speedily back & forth from your city to harbour. Whether it has an in game effect or not I have no idea, but there's a definite feel good factor involved

PRODIGAL, I love your attitude. Seems some folks forget that the objective of most gamers is just to have fun. I, also, like to see the back-to-back wagons, smell the leather, and hear the crack of the wagoneer's whip. Just makes one feel all content.

Aye, I find myself building highways on the Balearic islands just for the principle of the thing.

Those are Roman citizens damnit, and by God they're going to get a decent road network!

Has anyone parked one of your units on a road between enemy cities or harbors? The trade is cut off. The wagons stop.

Sooner or later, the enemy will attack you to allow their trade to continue. It is a nice way to get the enemy to come out and fight from their fortresses.
