Often times during a campaign game, we may wonder just what's going on within those provinces we can't see, the ones not yet revealed due to distance. Maybe just to see who's ahead "over there"; this usually is a matter when playing a Daimyo where keeping a constant eye on Hojo isn't possible.
Rather than use resources training a ninja, shinobi, etc. to use as scout, or typing in a cheat, there's a neat little feature I've known about that can help out.
Simply choose an army, or any figure (a shinobi if you have one, for example) and click on it. You can move it over any location on the map, and if you suspend it over an "invisible" province, a small script appears telling you who it belongs to. You can continue to move your "man" over as much of the map as possible, but you won't be allowed to "drop" it unless it's a valid move in the first place.
While it isn't nearly as informative as having an actual spy, it does help in gauging just who might be approaching in strength (say, if Hojo has half the map and the only divider between you an him are a line of Ronin provinces).

Yep I use this too. In current campaign Takeda is the horde and I have Oda between me(Mori) and Takeda. So I didn't want to break through Oda's line and let Takeda get a straight hit on me.
I held my line leaving Oda in the way of Takeda. Wouldn't have known how far Takeda was away if this little trick didn't work, without sending emissaries everywhere.
You can also tell the approx strength of other clans by how many provinces they take in a turn.

Well guys, you can see the whole map just by viewing the throne room map. The provinces will be laid out in the color of the clan that occupies them.

If you see all the east covered in purple then you know it's time to put on hip waders and start the bloodbath

Going to the throne room and back is a real pain.

duh. leave it someone else to point out the obvious (throne room), which I missed, to my much-more-complicated-shortcut.
    well...now there are 2 ways!

Much-more-complicated-shortcut... wouldn't that be an oxymoron?
