Had an interesting siege experience that I've not noticed as a topic here before: a long range siege--it looks like a bug and it has a number of bugs associated with it. I needed to besiege Athens. I had a nice stack and there were several small armies clustered around the city. I brushed one or two aside, and the pathing seemed to show that I could approach from the northern edge despite having an intervening unit or two in the way. So I ordered an attack on the city anyway from a few hexes back (rather than advancing first, then ordering siege.) To my surprise, the army did a "long range siege" from two hexes away, with an enemy army in between.

Now it gets buggy...I couldn't attack the city after my equipment was built because of the army in between--the attack option was not available on the strategy map. Nor could I attack that army with my siege force, because it would break the siege (as the dialogue box warned.) So I marched in another small force to engage the interstitial army. That got them out of the way and the siege was ready for conclusion. So I then ordered an attack by the besieging army. I took to the field only to discover my sap points and towers were missing from the battlefield. I had no siege gear, so I had to take the loss and retreat. Perhaps my siege gear was sitting out in a field 20 miles away?
