I had heard the hype about Seven Samurai many times over the past several years but decided not to get it because I was scared it was one of those crappy art house jobs. I eventually got it last year just to end the mystery and my god I loved it. I am not sure what it is but no other film comes close to what it gives me.
I have since looked around for other films which may have the same greatness but I am very warey of picking up a crap unrealistic samurai film.
Can anyone who has seen the film advise me on other films which give the same... whatever it is?

NB. I think the thing it gave me was the ability to get inside each of the characters and to be able to experience events through their eyes.

Yojimbo is a pretty interesting film, also by Kurosawa.

Yojimbo is a good film but also somewhat a spoof of the samurai genre as his sequel, Sanjuro (not to me though) both very, very good film. You want Kagemusha, Ran, Throne of blood, Rashomon, Samurai Banners, The Hidden Fortress, Samurai assassin (only for Toshiro Mifune and some great swordplay).

There are soooo many and all those listed above star Toshiro. It's near impossible to list a few films "equal in greatness as 7 samurai". Can you list 10 movie as great as say...Citizen Kane? ... (see what i mean?)

Rage seems to be trying to tell us something.....

anyway, also look for Heaven and Earth, the Japanese movie, not the American one which shares the name but is completely different.

Try 'Ran' by Akira K. It shows a good implementation of war strategy & politic. Good scenes also for castle battle.

This is a bit off topic, but...

I was interested so I went out and bought the DVD version of Seven Samurai. It was amazing, but did everyone else's dvd have a lot of little glitches? Just curious if I should return it to the store and get another copy or not. PLEASE REPLY!

My SS dvd didn't have any glitches - and for anyone who HASN'T seen the DVD version, GO GET IT NOW - the running commentary is the best I've ever seen on a DVD, with the one for DAS BOOT coming in a close second.

and by the way, IMHO Ran was the worst and most disapointing DVD release EVER. Poor quality, no on/off option for the subtitles, NO FEATURES AT ALL... what a waste of money. I could have saved $20 and bought the video...! I think someone in DVD land just wanted to make a quick buck. If they aren't going to put the time into the DVD, they should just leave it on video for someone else to do the DVD version later on.

I really enjoy the Zatoichi series of movies.... Even though they are sometimes a little far fetched, they convey much of the spirit of the times as well as culture and incredible swordsmanship.
If you want to really get into things, and have money, and don't mind that they are only in japanese check out this link....
first video is of the choreographer for Kurasawasan. http://budogu.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/page18.html
I almost forgot the samurai 1,2 and 3.....The story of Musashi with Mifunesan. Check the 5 pages of videos here for all titles mentioned in this thread plus many many more http://www.bugei.com/ushop/index.cgi...show&cat=Media

Actually, I just got Seven Samurai on DVD for myself (haven't watched yet) and was going to get Ran or Kagemusha but the place had neither....

Any recommendations guys as far as Kurosawa films go (on DVD). And CEWest, do you know what maker/version of Ran the DVD was?? (so that I know not to get that one if I see it)

    thanks,

The RAN dvd was from 'Fox Lorber home video' - never heard of them before. AVOID THAT ONE LIKE THE PLAGUE!! Is there another version of RAN out there? I'd gladly sacrifice this version to the garbage-can gods for a different version.
The 'Seven Samurai' version I have is from the 'criterion collection' - http://www.criterionco.com/asp/release.asp?id=2
That is an excellent version, high quality picture and sound, and excellent running commentary.
