It has been a long time since I played that, but the key that helped me win was to concentrate my troops on one group of the enemy and to counter attack them very aggresively.Originally Posted by blahblahblah
I think I walked my guys almost to the top of the ridge in front of the city then attacked and overwhelmed Saladin's personal troops.
I killed him off quite quickly and this shattered the morale of the enemy who routed.
Once out of easy reach they would gradually rally and come back to fight, so the trick then was to attack each of them in force which made them rout again.
Hope that helps.
The way I won the batlle, as TonkaToys, was to concentrate my men in one area. In this battle, the enemy(Saladin) army is easily routed. Saladins army will attack from 3 directions I believe, and I just formed a sort of semicircle with archers in the middle to counter that. When I last played it, a group of Saladin's horsemen somehow got around to the side of the city and after chasing after Saladins routed army, I had to manouver my troops through a narrow gap to attack them.
For Scotland!
This battle is actually pretty good instruction on how to fight a defensive battle. Try the following strategy:
1. Use three units of spearmen to form a defensive line in front of the wall, but don't try to defend the whole front of the wall - instead, make your line shorter by defending only about half of it. Pick either the left or the right half; that way, you can use the walls at one corner to hold one flank. Use your remaining spearmen unit to refuse the other flank, so that all your spearmen are facing outward with no flanks exposed.
2. Behind your spearmen, place your bowmen. They will need to be in two lines, since you won't have enough room to form a single long line. Bowmen need to be in thin ranks to be most effective, and they are crucial in this battle. Turn skirmish off on the bowmen, and turn fire-at-will off at first as well. Have them on hold formation/hold position.
3. Keep your feudal foot knights and royal knights in reserve behind your spearwall. The royal knights can be in the center to encourage your men. Place one unit of feudal foot knights on each flank, behind the spearmen.
4. The enemy approaches! They will lead the way with horse archers. These will not do much damage to your men, so don't waste too many arrows on them. Fire at them only if they are close enough for your arrows to be effective and they are in close formation. Don't shoot at them if they spread out; you won't hit enough to make it worthwhile.
5. When the Saracen cavalry, camels, and infantry approach, take down as many as you can with arrow fire. Camels in particular are vulnerable to this. Turning fire-at-will on will work OK in this phase of the battle, but make sure your archers are picking good targets. Severely depleted enemy units may spread out; after this, they aren't good targets.
6. When the time is right, counter-charge with everyone except the bowmen. This may be when most of your bowmen run out of arrows (your crossbowmen will still have ammo left). Strike hardest at Saladin himself, who will be sitting on a camel. Look for gaps in the enemy line, and use your royal knights to charge through them and hit the enemy on a flank or from the rear. Be sure to use your feudal foot knights to maximum effect; they are very tough and can kill almost anything.
7. If your spearmen start to waver, send in bowmen to assist in melee combat. They will not be that effective, but can turn the tide of a battle if used correctly.
8. Once the enemy general is routed, killed, or captured, the entire Saracen army will quickly follow. Don't let your infantry pursue too far; bring them back together and keep your army in a cohesive unit. Otherwise, Saracen units may rally, then isolate and destroy individual infantry units.
9. The battle is just about won by this point. All you will have left to do is mop up any enemy units that haven't run away.
Good luck!
