Bloody game! I'm still no farther than before. I unchecked the authentification Drivers as suggested, I have installed new drivers and still nothing. I am at a loss. Why is this "Publishing Product Information" stopping me?

Sorry for your troubles, mate. I wish I were smarter in these matters, and could tell you "Do this..." and solve your problem. But I'm not.

This is what I think is happening: after RTW has (almost) completed installing, it tries to register itself with Activision (the game publisher). So it 'pings' Activision, in effect saying: "Hi, I'm Pindar, with a game to register". Activision responds with "OK, what is your product info (serial number, maybe your IP address, etc)?"

That's where you crash. So I'm guessing that your machine 'thinks' that Activision's response is an unwanted intrusion or attack on it. To protect itself, your machine closes the entire process.

IF that is what is happening, maybe lowering your security settings temporarily, and turning off any firewalls and virus-detection programs (again: temporarily) would do the trick. The idea being to open the door to Activision.

I admit that this is merely a shot-in-the-dark solution. If you try it, please let us know the outcome.

    Good luck

    Kukrikhan,

This is a copy of a post I just wrote on what I think is a ralated thread:

"I haven't been able to play RTW yet. I have been working with some of the minds here and on the .net site to figure out the solution. Yesterday, a fellow on the .net site mentioned he had the exact same issues as I namely: the game would install up to the "Publishing Product Information" and then crash. He found that the problem related to SP2. He uninstalled his SP2, installed the game and then reinstalled SP2. This seemed to work for him. My computer is only a couple weeks old. It came with SP2 already part of the operating system. I am unable to unistall it. I was thinking of contacting the computer store (which, in my case, is in another state from myself) and have them send me a copy of XP with SP1 and then attempting something similar to what I just described. If you have any other suggestions I would appreciate it. I am fairly ignorant of computers: I typically only know enough to mess things up."

I think this may very well be my problem. If you have any suggestions that could help me around this without following the course I outlined above (which I don't want to do simply because it invovles waiting for the mail to deliver the XP version with SP1 to begin the process) I wold appreciate it. My sense is that I pretty much have to be able to uninstall SP2 to move forward however.

You might want to look at your CDRW drivers or even firmware flash. This could be related to anti-piracy type stuff. Either SP2 or RTW might be triggering off something they see with the burner. This has happened before, but I don't recall the message that you are getting.

As was suggested, reducing firewall and security settings might do the trick. I suggest disconnect from the internet and cutting them back to min, then installing. Then re-enable and reconnect to the net.

Kraellin also found a way to delete all RTW related registry entries to cure a problem with installing the patch. There might be something helpful there. I can't point you to the thread though. It was a couple of months back in the Apothecary. Man I miss the search function...the current lack of search is like having no long term memory.

    Hi Pindar

Just read your post about the SP2 being related to your problem.

It may not be relevant to your PC but I have had to do a reformatt and reinstall of my OS due to other problems.
I have Windows XP SP1 with SP2 installed on my PC.

I have twice installed RTW after installing SP2 and have had no trouble installing the game.

So you may find that what you are thinking of doing may not cure your problem.

    Wish I could help further.

Thank you Gentlemen for your assistance. I was able to install SP1 over the dreaded SP2 and now have RTW awaiting me. Thanks again for your help and ideas.

Very glad you got it working. You should still be able to install the security updates without doing the full SP2. SP2 is really just a bundle from what I understand.
