Thread: Desert Armour Penalty
m4rt14n 10:42 12-10-2004
I'd really like the Armour Penalty ur units get running around in the Desert back like MTW. In MTW, almost all of my desert units were unarmoured, due to getting blazed in the scorching heat. I remembered routing a huge Crusader Force all gleaming with silver/gold armour with lousy peasants, archers, and HA's, running them around all over the place.

I believe they set it up so that the more armour u got the more tired ur units can get faster in the desert. I mean this makes more sense than just bumpin Egypt's units to unreasonable defence ratings...

(Yes, im still pissed with iron-skinned egyptian units running)

I thought there was something like this - I'm sure I read somewhere (manual, possibly), that heavily armoured units get tired in the desert, and its even useful to 'wait' before the fight if you're up against armour. Maybe its a case of everyone gets a penalty except those units with 'bonus in deserts' ability. However, the whole stamina/tiredness thing is so bugged I'm not sure it would work even if it was meant to...

The 'desert heat' property is bugged, just like the stamina. Desert infantry/calvary tire faster in the desert, compared to units from the north.

The fatigue effects of heat, possibly armour, and stamina are bugged/backwards. Hard to believe it was released with these particular bugs. It is very hard to see how the game engine was supposed to work with bugs like this getting in the way.

There is a simple workaround, but it involves making changes to one of the text files in the data folder. Unfortunately, I can't remember where I saw the info.

I don't know if the armour effects for heat are backwards or not (or if they exist at all.) I have seen it stated that the stat_heat value is being treated in reverse by the .exe. The solution is to reverse the signs of every single units' stat_heat entry in the export_descr_unit.txt file. Easy, yes, but also tedious and time consuming (I have already done it.)
