Sparta is a city not an ethnicity. The clan if you will was Lakedemon. But only kids from the one and only Sparta were the best. Taht's how it should be in the game.

Thanks to all for the responses. I actually think that is a good thing (restricting spartian hoplites to sparta (and I guess it's 'colony')) - I only wish the same were true for legion units - only built in roman cities, auxlia only in conq cities - would make the game much harder for a human player vs. the computer.

The newest Rome:Total realism mod takes this into consideration (up to a point). You can now only build units in barracks you've built, so if you, as a roman, captured a barbarian city, you wouldn't be able to build any units until you'd demolished their buildings and built your own, ie, Romanized the city.

It works on a cultural rather than a factional level, however, so any Hellenic faction can use the buildings of any other Hellenic faction, for example.

It seems a reasonable system, though I can't vouch for it as yet since my Seleucids have only taken other Hellenic cities so far...

The Romans were really keen on getting the conquered folks signed up in the army ASAP - that little detail allowed them to "snowball" like they did, and especially early on shrug off the kinds of casualties that would've broken the backs of many empires. Heck, post Marius at least doing a twenty-five year stint in the legions was among the best ways to get a Roman citizen status...

The Total Realism approach would be about as hardcore as you could get with the "roman only" approach without completely flying into the face of history.

I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. --- Proof of the existence of the FSM, if needed, can be found in the recent uptick of global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. Apparently His Pastaness is to be worshipped in full pirate regalia. The decline in worldwide pirate population over the past 200 years directly corresponds with the increase in global temperature. Here is a graph to illustrate the point."

FYI, Tarentum was a Greek colony founded by Spartans, or rather, the illegitimate sons of Spartan women who decided to fool around while their men were off fighting elsewhere. Nonetheless these exiles were Spartans but obviously did not model their new home after Sparta. The Tarentines never adopted the Lycurgian constitution and thus their culture and society wound up being more like your average Greek city state of that era than Spartan.

Sicilia Graecus (where Syracuse is located) having the 'sparta' resource doesn't surprise me. It has to be an oversight on the part of the developers. The strategic map has lots of little errors and inconsistencies like that. For instance, when rebelling why does Cyrenacia generally declare itself a Macedonian province? Check the descr_strat text file and look for the line that says faction_creator macedon to get the answer. Sicilia Graecus and a few other provinces that should have stronger cultural ties to the Greek City States also have this line. Seems like someone didn't double check the strategic map files for errors before finalizing the retail build.

    LOL, that is so wrong.

Syracuse was one of the oldest greek city-states, so it makes sense that it can build spartan hopelites. On a related note, some cities revolt to Macedonia because, historically, it was very powerful not so long ago, hense their allegience.
