Thread: A few questions on Marius' Reforms

Default A few questions on Marius' Reforms

    OK, here we go:

1.) Can factions other that the Romans benefit from the Reforms? I was mostly thinking of making them a requirement for the different Imitation Legionaries out there so that the Armenians couldn't make Legionary Cohorts before the Romans themselves.

2.) Can buildings be linked to the Reforms? So that you couldn't build a Catapult Range or whatever before them? Also ties in with the above question.

3.) Can mercenary units be tied to them? I was thinking of a way to make sure that Samnites can only be recruited at the beginning of a campaign, before they would become fully Romanized, and having them dissappear with the Reforms appeared a good solution.

4.) No to do with the reforms, but here we go regardless: Can mercenary units be changed so that only certain nations can recruit them? To follow up on the above example I'd like to make Samnites available to everyone save the Romans.

So there you have it! Thanks in advance for all your kind answers.

Sure, you can make any building/unit dependent on the Marian reforms, not just Roman ones. Just add the event into the requirements the same way it exists for the post-Marian stuff.

    Yes. See above.

This is a good question, I have not really delved into mercenary availability yet. It follows that if you can add any requirements at all to mercenary availablity, you could do so for an event.

You wouldn't want to use the Marian reforms for this though. Make your own event & event trigger, add a description appropriate to explain why the mercenaries are no longer available or what have you, and use it for the requirement or cut off point.

The short answer is I believe so, since some are only available to certain factions right now, and I sincerely doubt that is hard coded. However, I can't tell you how at the moment.

Mercenary availability can't be linked to the Marian Reforms, existance of buildings or any other factor.

There are a number of mercenary pools covering one or more regions, each pool contains one or more mercenary types available in that area, with each pool being totally independant ie. if I recruit a Merc Warband in pool X, it doesn't effect the Merc Warband(s) in pool Y.

Each mercenary type within a pool has an initial number of units that are available, the maximum number that can be waiting to be recruited and a replenishment rate that is actually a range to give a random effect with common mercenaries having higher replenishment values. Replenishment rates, and initial and maximum numbers for the same mercenary type can vary between pools. It's also possible to vary the starting experience so that a mercenary type recruited from one pool start of superior to the same type recruited from other pools.

There is no way to restrict mercenaries by nation other than for MP games; this done by altering the ownership stat in the units file.
