Thread: War Elephants

    Default War Elephants

I am playing as Romans and it is the year 120BC already.

I have occupied North Africa for almost 80 years and I have not seen any merc elephants for hire.

I have also completed almost all of the senate mission, only perhaps missed 2. Yet they have not offer me any elephants or major exotic units.

Can anybody out there can help me to get some elephants?

    Thanks.

Other than mercenaries and senate missions there isn't really anything you can do to get them, sorry.

Rome never used elephants as they considered them unreliable in battle and more trouble than they were worth.

You should have seen some merc elephant units by now. It may be that the game is hardcoded so that the Roman factions cannot hire any mercenary elephant units. In the mercenary text file you can adjust which regions feature certain mercenary units. I added merc elephants to the Egyptian provinces and sure enough Egypt was able to hire them at the onset of a campaign.

I'm not a fan of the elephants anyway.

They move too slow on the battlefield, and I tend to get much greater effect using large numbers of light horse to encircle the enemy and attack from behind while my infantry meet them head on.

Elephants are cool. Especially when clearing city streets of defenders. But a phalanx does that well too.

    elephants are so fun...

send them running at the backs of a huge group of enemies and watch men get trampled and flung out of the way

Elephants are too kewl for skewl

One unit of elephant = 36 of a normal unit. Also they can heal. I don't think there is a better unit.

They did have them when they went against Philip of Macedon. Wether they used them or not is another story. If I'm correct they had 20 of them.

There's a percent chance they'll show up each turn. So maybe it is just bad luck. And as the Romans I have seen them avail for recruiting.

I'm afraid you could be wrong. The Epirotes used 20 elephants AGAINST the Romans. The elephants were presents from the Pharaoh, Ptolemy.

They have an isanely small replinish level, 0.005 if I am correct... so that would mean there would only be a unit in a province that has elephants, AS a merc...every 200 years... so if someone hired them before you... go sack another province...

    Start over as Carthage!

Sorry, not trying to be snide... But how can you not love a faction with holy prostitution, execution squares, and elephants?

Sorry to cause such a stir.

The Seleucid have elephants and no holy prostitution, but I still say go with Carthage.

No, Oaty is correct. You are not even talking about the same century as Oaty. Think Cynocephalae and the 2nd Macedonian War, the Romans had ~20 elephants among their allied force.

I had war elephants in both my Roman Armies during my Egyptian campaigns, they are rare but do pop-up occassionaly as mercenaries options.

In fact one of my few defeats during this campaign was a direct result of one of these mercenary elephant units running amok and smashing through my own infantry line.

Must admit though that I haven't seen a single mercenary elephant unit available for hire since starting my new campaign as the Egyptians.

Ive come across Mercenary War Elephants in Assyria playing as Seleucids.

But Numidians in Custom battle have Mercenary War Elephants...so they might be around somewhere. Look in Numidia and Africa (Carthage)

    Talking Re: War Elephants

i have only got merc elephants twice in three campaigns. once in some province by the tip of the straight of gibraltar (south) and once in some parthian place called nowhere. both times they were bought by expeditionary forces into enemy territories, mabey youi have to give one province to rebels give it a few years and then look for mercs.

ever thought it had something to do with roman version of total war (no pun intendid just how it was) we all know at the end of the 3rd punic war romans ravaged the carthaginians lands salt farmland, poison rivers, burn towns but a little known fact was the merciless hunting of elephants. i read in one of my books that tons of hired horse archers traveled in droves killing elephants for the romans to stop elephant warfare.
