Default Any tips on setting up MTW MP without Internet?

I want to see if it's possible to combine MP with the atmosphere you get of playing a board game with people in the same room.

I've linked two pcs with a null modem cable at home to do 1 v. 1 multiplayer - it's got some advantages compared to playing over the internet, like no crashing modem connections mid-battle, and the ability to laugh at the loser in the same room when you drive their army from the field.

Any ideas on how to do this with three or four pcs?

    - i.e. to set up a mini LAN at home. I'm not a LAN techie so have little idea how to do this - is it as simple as fitting two null modem cables into the back of a host pc, or is it more complicated?

    Grateful for any suggestions.

The way I've done this is to put a NIC (network interface card) in each maching and wire them all to a hub. Then in the network control panel configure TCP/IP on each macine, and manually give each machine a different ip address within the same subnet. For example if you have four machines: 192.168.0.100, 192.168.0.101, 192.168.0.102 and 192.168.0.103. If you have a DHCP router, then you can let the machines get a dynamic ip address.

If all the machines have USB, then I believe it's possible to network them with a USB hub, and you wouldn't need a NIC in each machine. I've never set up a USB network, and don't know the details.

If you are using a null modem cable on a serial port, I think you are limited to two machines.

Cant help with the technical side I'm afraid.
But I do understand what you mean. I had excellent fun with strategy games when we used to play over a LAN at the uni and were actually all in the same room. We could call out for help, laughe shout at each other and make the most funny comments. Was great fun

I have a Linksys router and all you have to do is network your PCs to the router and the LAN setup will be automatic. Launch the game, as normal, go into multiplayer/LAN and your game should show up on the other PCs. I have 2 PCs and a laptop hooked up to play MTW/VI with my kids, via LAN.

Good luck and have fun! :)

Those darn fast reaction-time little buggers, taught me all I know about routing off the field of battle! hehe Do you know how humiliating it is to be beaten by an 8 year old? That's my boy!
