Thread: Pre-Battle Speech

  1. #1

    Default Pre-Battle Speech

    I have gotten to the point that I no longer listen to the pre-battle speech. Last night however the speech started to run while I was setting up my Ibook to record some TV. This speech was like none other I've heard.

    Somehow one of my new family members is crazy. HIs name is Amulius the Mad, really...that's what it says on his scroll. Instead of letting him stay in a city to ruin it, I used him as my conquering general. One of his speeches included the following:

    "and for tonights entertainment, Gaul. If you kill them there is enough wine in camp to float a boat, and the womenfolk will be...uh...appreciative."

    "...every man who lives through this battle will be my sister..."

    I heard this speech twice from him last night. I don't know if there is anyway to record this. By the way, after destroying Gaul, Spain, Brittania, and Germany Amulius the mad is undefeated. He never loses and his men never rout. I have seen hastati fight down to one or two before turning.

    It sounds like your general is both an alcoholic and insane. It's nice how the speeches reflect their personality.

    Many cool speeches, but my favourite is from a Rome:TW Presentation Video. A Julii army VS a Seleucid one. The Julii general said: "Seleucids? PAH, I wipe better from the soles of my boots"

    I've heard the "appreciative camp followers" speech many times, especially with Carthage.

    My favourite one is still the blood bathing one. Im not sure quite sure how it goes but its something like this: "I want to see blood, I want to bath in their blood, I want to bath in their blood for a week!"

    Also what was the trait that gave your speech, Glycerus I really want to hear those insane speeches.

    You can find the text in:
    .../Rome - Total War/Data/prebattle_speeches_subtitles.txt

    Favorite one I've ever heard was before the final assault in a long campaign:

    "Hello. Today we are gathered here to do battle. Regretable, isn't it, but sometimes, you know, life is like that. You have to do something that you don't want to do, just because someone is telling you to do it. I didn't want to be here myself, but then my mother told me that I'd better make a reasonable show of it all, so here we go then... "

    My favorite one I found in the file, and am hoping to hear someday:

    "Well ride me sideways and whip me with a winkle fork, lads! There's a lot of the bastards, aren't there? Those arseweasels are here to get away from their unfulfilled, shrill wives. Hardly surprising, as they all have tiny little manhoods! Smaller than a flea on a cockroach's bum!"

    I got ripped off. Mine does'nt have the speeches in text. When did you buy your copy? I got mine on release day. I tried unzipping the sounds on the cd but the only thing I get is a compiled log. You would'nt mind emailing me that text so I can read them would you.

    This is all I see in that log.

    A Compilation of my favorite speeches.

    {Roman_Intro_05_1}
    My brave men! Victory shall be ours, by grace of my inspired leadership. But this means I cannot risk myself in the front line. I must remain safe, guarded by you, my loyal warriors! This is not cowardice, oh no. It is prudence, the handmaiden of victory!

    {Roman_Intro_11_1}
    I am known as something of a philosopher. Some ask me, 'Why are we here?' The answer is often complicated... but today we are here to kill all those bastards.

    {Roman_Extro_05_2}
    And take heart men! For we have sharper pointy things than them. Oh yes, much sharper…

    {Roman_Extro_05_3}
    And any man who comes through this fight mostly unharmed will be my sister! It'll be free frocks and jollies for ever, you'll see!

    {Roman_Extro_06_4}
    Er, where was I? Oh yes. Attack the elephants, men! Go for those pink trunky beggars! There was... something else…

    {Roman_Extro_06_6}
    Er, where was I? Oh yes. Attack the men, my elephants! Go for those little pink sods! Err, was there something… pass the wine, there's a good chap!

    {Roman_Extro_07_2}
    But beware! Beware! The enemy will be merciless, because I ate all their bees! They have not tasted honey for many a moon, and this has made them mad for revenge! To arms, my pretties, to arms!

    {Roman_Extro_07_3}
    And remember, they may have the Moon People on their side, but we have lovely hats. Those hats will shield us from their fearsome gaze!

    {Roman_Comments_05_1}
    Now some of you may think that defence isn't quite my strongest skill. Well, be that as it may, you have only to stand here, die and stop the enemy. That is good defence. That is what I expect!

    Glad you're all enjoying the speeches.

    The "arseweasels and winkle fork" speech sound file was dropped from the original release at the insistence of the censors and certificators. Apart from anything else, a few people in the system weren't entirely sure what a winkle fork was, and felt that it might be exceptionally, exceptionally rude. I think they were a little disappointed to find out that it's a fork, used for eating winkles. It may - and I stress the *may* - reappear in the patched version.

    As you may have realised, this speech was supposed to be added to the mix when a general was "earthy and direct" in his choice of adjectives, adverbs and nouns - OK, when he swore like a trooper. The original version of the speech was unusable and completely filthy.
    Gentlemen should exercise caution and wear stout-sided boots when using the Fintry-Kyle Escape Apparatus. Ladies, children, servants and those of a nervous disposition should be strongly encouraged to seek other means of hurried egress.

    Captain Fishpants,

    Any chance of more interesting speeches for non-Roman factions? I've found most of the barbarian speeches to be short and the same. I would think the barbarian speeches would be fertile ground for earthy comments (hey, a pun)...and perhaps some self deprecating ones related to their cultures.

    Ooops. My fault there.

    I should have pointed out that the close proximity of the words "arse" and "weasel" were seen as being particularly appalling too, and hardly worthy of any further comment by Powers That Be. Although some of the original rude word + animal combos were much naughtier, and caused conniptions!

    unusual speeches come from unusual generals. If all our generals are the standard "battle winner" style then you will hear the same speech over and over. Use generals with different traits to hear different speeches.

    The speeches are contained in the file "Rome - Total War\data\sounds\voice3.dat"
    But, the file is packed with lots of different sounds, and can't be navigated with standard audio software. The file voice3.idx has an index into the file you can read with a hex editor. If I get bored this weekend, mabye I'll write a quick program to unpack all the voice data..... On the other hand, I seem to recall someone writing a similar program for MTW. If there's a MTW one, it could possibly work with RTW as well.
