Maybe that's just the way Carthage is

In my campaign, I was at war with the world (except my ally Greece) for pretty much the entire campaign. The only reason that Greece remained a staunch ally was I never saw them after they were booted from Sicily.

Well thats the thing
I couldn't get an ally
NO ONE would ally me, and I had my diplomats all around the map.
I didnt even attack anyone besides Rome, after they attacked me.
and I wasnt weaker then these other guys until I had to fight off 9 factions' armies.

The AI likes to hit and run. When you start as Scipii and chuck all your forces at the Greek city over on Scily, if you leave only one unit to guard Messana, the Carthaginian elephant stack will come in along the coast into your lands. When it happened it didnt have enough MP to move all the way. So i moved a few Hastatii, nothing much, back into messana to deter the com from finishing his raid. That sorted them out. I assume an ally might do this as well. After all, it only takes a single act of aggession to start a war.
