Thread: 10,000 Members !!!
IrishMike 07:16 12-29-2004
Wow, I just noticed the Guild has now surpassed 10,000 members!

Seems to me there should be some type of post to commemorate this great feat. Since I joined here in June, this board has grown at least by 1,000 members. Long may the Guild live on!

I wonder how many are actually active though.

None the less though that mean the Guild now has divisional strength. We should organize into battlin buddy brigades and battalions now, right?

Some stats:

as of 1300 GMT, 29 Dec 04:
76 Senior Members

4,369 Members (of whom about 2,000 have visted in past week, and about 550 have posted)

5,480 Junior Members (of whom 1,095 have posted at least once; meaning there are over 4,000 registered "lurkers")

We register, on average, 18 new usernames per day. Highest number of new registerees per day was 52 when R:TW was released; lowest number was 2.

Finally, on average, we have double the number of unregistered "Guests" visiting at any given time, than we have registered users visiting.

One can draw several conclusions from those numbers; my favorite is: We have many, many (did I say 'many'?) many more readers here than we have writers. It's helpful for those 10% or so who are "the writers" to remember their entire audience - your post may be directed to one or two individual users, but it is read by hundreds, sometimes thousands.

Then we had best put on our finest clothes and use the most Victorian of language lest we cause affront to the readers out there.

How long do inactive accounts remain before they are deleted if they are?

Good question. JAG is almost correct: we don't, as a general rule, delete inactive accounts, because many of them return (but only for a few days) whenever a new game or expansion is released. They get their info, then go merrily on their way, not to be seen again for 6months or a year. We have no problem accomodating that kind of user/visitor by keeping their account active.

We do sometimes delete duplicate accounts ( or merge them) during the process of helping users who have registration problems.

And there are also the Capo's of the world, who create multiple accounts for various reasons. Those only get paid attention to/deleted if a problem arises.

Hello,

It's very hard to say something based on that number of 10,000, other than that the registration system is appearantly working at times.

Back in fall 2002 we had to migrate from UBB forum to Ikonboard. An unofficial convertor script was used to import users/topics and stats. Many new things for me and it wasn't a walk in the park, I deleted some 1,500 accounts who were both a few months old and never posted to make conversion smoother (made it easier to track a glitch later on).

I've seen a few of those names and quite a few are misregisters so to say, sometimes rebellious.

No accounts have been deleted since (the database did drop a few by itself though, but the reported ones could all be restored from backups).

The board was struggling (again :) ) a while back and I took a look at unused accounts (less is better for performane). There were over a 1,000, but none have been deleted yet.

This database allows to retrieve more information, like last activity instead of last post; don't want to delete the account of an (semi)-active reader.

There may be another pruning of accounts to clean the database, but that will only be never used accounts. The criteria would be 0 posts and last activity 6 months ago or something like that. Exceptions are hatefull accounts.

I don't have a problem with different accounts per person, but I frown upon the purpose they sometimes get used for (not rarely to dodge good manners).

What KukriKhan says sound correct: there are many readers, both registered and unregistered.

How many Jag? Not 10,000, but enough to read new topics about different subjects on a daily basis. Cheers to all the authors for providing content.

Er Yeah if you find like 10 accounts named Caporegime198- or like that they're mine.
