Sigh too true. I guess your right, its just a pain. Maybe I've been playing the little uns too long. Started a new game with the Byz and I promise, I am having no problems with influence or star struck heirs. First Emp has 6 crowns and after a little disagreement with the turks over who rules rum my Emp went up to 7. I kept him there until he kicked off and after hunting down the right heir to take the throne. That heir skipped over his papa's 6 influence and started off at 8.

It was a pleasant surprise after playing the above mentioned games where I end up owning the world just after the Horde because I'm constantly trying to up my king's influence rating. About time that game gave me a little respect.

Influence is linked to the rest of the kings stats. A king with exellent stats starts of with much higher influence, usually around 6-8. Atleast my king does it, even as the Danes. Get 9 in influence with your king BTW. Influence got exellent side-effects, like better hiers, better random generals, extremly loyal generals, probably more influence for the son and I've probably missed a few more effects.
We are all aware that the senses can be deceived, the eyes fooled. But how can we be sure our senses are not being deceived at any particular time, or even all the time? Might I just be a brain in a tank somewhere, tricked all my life into believing in the events of this world by some insane computer? And does my life gain or lose meaning based on my reaction to such solipsism?

Just try win battles whit your king and try make war against factions. One Easy way to get influence is to help ally. For instance when playing whit Danes help English armys against France. If you take out Germans they will really need it. This is again one reason why navy is important. And always remember to have good agents ...You can kill unwanted heirs. I Once got 4star Heir to my 4star King After that I started using my new heir in battles and when he was made to king he was 7star king and same amount influence.

Lifting a sieged ally is 1 point of influence and probably the easiest way to raise it especially as the Danes.

Aaah! Thanks for that - I assumed all you got was a crummy parchment of thanks from your allies!!
