Thread: Top 500 Songs
TonkaToys 10:01 01-05-2005
Well, Virgin Radio have done their annual vote for your top 500 songs, and the top ten results are:

  1. LED ZEPPELIN: Stairway to heaven
  2. U2: One
  3. GUNS N ROSES: Sweet child o mine
  4. REM: Everybody hurts
  5. ROBBIE WILLIAMS: Angels
  6. JOHN LENNON: Imagine
  7. QUEEN: Bohemian rhapsody
  8. THE VERVE: Bitter sweet symphony
  9. EAGLES: Hotel california
  10. COLDPLAY: Trouble

What surprises me is that Bohemian Rhapsody is so far down, Robbie Williams is so far up, the highest Beatles track is at number 11 and the highest Rolling Stones track is at 23!

That's what you get for asking the Great British public.

Bohemian Rhapsody and Everybody Hurts and Hotel California and Imagine are all extremely bad songs IMO

"Thath ridiculuth" as Daffy Duck would say.

U2 is 2? *
REM is 4? (I like REM but still...)
Robbie Wlliams is 5? (Ex-squeeze me?)
The Verve is 8? (Good song, but c'mon...)

I guess the boneheads who made the list never heard of the Beatles, or Pink Floyd, or Elvis, or any of a dozen other better bands.

*U2. Pffffft. Corporate rock at it's very best with Mr. Sunglasses Bono hobnobing with any politician and sucking up to every camera he sees. Good grief!

They're all semi-slow ballady stuff... I don't have a taste for that. Where's the room for the adrenal, fast, fun songs that make up the meat of a good band's work? Is this the stuff that you listen to in the car, at work, or at home? I don't know if I'm conveying this idea properly. I feel my opinion is that the best songs are those that streamline and perfect the band's general formula. Examples would be "For Whom the Bell Tolls", "Street Fighting Man", "El Phantasmo and the Chicken-Run Blast-o-Rama", you get the picture. Maybe.

The list is a joke, what rubbish up there.

lol! Those boneheads would be the British public - those who listen to virgin anyway.

And in these charts it is always pop songs and a few rock songs, there are never metal songs or real alternative songs which are just as 'great'. Where is hallowed be thy name or fear of the dark by Iron Maiden?! Or master of puppets or unforgiven 2 by Metallica? Or end of all hope or wishmaster by Nightwish? etc, etc. These lists are all rubbish.

- Not to mention one of the best songs ever, and THE best imo - chop suey by System of a down.

Probably stems from the demographic... white 25-35 year olds mainly.
Anyone seen any other lists of this type, eg: in Kerrang! Jag?

I agree with "Everybody Hurts" :::shudder:::. "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Hotel California" are average. "Imagine" is good.

The whole "top ten" ranges from good (John Lennon), to average (Queen), to garbage like Robbie Williams, Coldplay, Verve (What the...?). LOL

I know what you guys mean. I'm so sick of Bono and his crappy sunglasses. What the hell kind of style is that. Jeezus he sure needs a stylist. I mean he IS a millionaire.

Also the Verve doesn't deserve anywhere close top 500. They only have one hit which only good because it's taken from classical music.

Well, while I do like System of a Down and the song, I don't think it deserves the best song ever recognition. Yet, point for you for promoting *cough* alternative artists Dont get me wrong - all Im trying to say is that SoD has yet to work more to get on the top of the best songs EVER lists

Not mentioning NIRVANA: SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT (or any Nirvana song) is an insult The list is bull PERIOD

Hopefully. I'm not gonna say anything about his music since i know a lot of people praise U2 for their music. I don't want ot start a flamewar.

Robbie Williams?! Coldplay?!

Where are the Beatles? Where's the Floyd?

those bands are far beyond the majority of music buying public. I'm suprised I didn't see more people like Britney Spears or Jlo.

Well, I agree that Bono is a first-class attention grabber and annoying as such oftentimes, but he is a front man after all--that's what they tend to do. I don't think U2's early works were "Corporate Rock,"--not by a long shot. Boy, Sunday Bloody Sunday, and my favorite: The Unforgettable Fire, were all very good albums, imo.

Lol, I'm really laggin' ... I haven't even heard some of the songs in the top 10. And, except for #1, I'm rather surprised to see the ones listed. Oh well, I guess I have to keep in mind that such lists reflect the opinions of the middle of the human bell curve, so no big deal to me .

Stairway to Heaven? .. Best ever? .. Come off it there were better Zeppelin tracks than that. I preferred the version released by Rolf Harris.

As for best track ever, that is simply too difficult or even impossible to answer. There have been far too many superb songs

Perhaps we should compile a list of the Org's top 100?
Each person gets three votes, over the period of a month.
Someone compiles the top 100 from that.

Would anyone be interested in taking part?

Please. Most of Britain doesn't deserve to live for voting Robbie Williams in the top 10.

That is the biggest load of BS I've ever read.

Nirvana - Come As You Are is the ONLY song by one of the most influential band of the 90's on the list? Where is Rape Me? Heart Shaped Box? Lithium? Smells Like Teen Spirit? Dumb? This list is total arse the moment it left the majority of Nirvana tracks out....that fact it was somewhere like 343 or something makes it more of a mockery.

I also second JAG on Nightwish, where the hell is Wishmaster? Nightquest? The Kinslayer? End of All Hope?

Obviously pop music is the only music that matters.

What do you think ppl? this is voted for...so you get crummy music in the top ten. After all, Robbie Williams IS very popular. And one more thing, TonkaToys is right, we have enough crappy generic pop bands :coughs: IE busted, macfly et al to repluse the odd invasion
