Why don't you put your archers up front ?

As the Romans I tend to use three lines: archers, skirmishers and legions, with cav at either side and the general center back.
I haven't really experimented with the other factions enough to really have a strategy for things like spearmen and elephants.

Another formation for germans:

AA AA AA
SS SS SS
SS AX women* AX SS
NR chosens NR
CAV CAV

AA=archers
SS=spears
AX=axemen
NR=night raiders
*general's harem. (NOTE:general should be deaf)
etc.

Use your chosen archers to win any ranged duals before their archers kill your lightly armored soldiers, then force them to attack by harassing them with archers. Lay back and watch them run to your spearwall. Get your women shouting and flank them with night raiders and/or chosens.
Voilá: instant rout.

Hoplites, even spartans (they tend to be the first ones to rout, for some reason they are really afraid of women), don't stand a chance. Actually it will beat the hell out of almost any infantry army, although phalangites will just walk over the spearmen.
