Thread: How to get to a game were the reforms come into play?

Question How to get to a game were the reforms come into play?

I have finished about 8 Roman campaigns until now. The last two were on H/H (Julli, Brutii). I don't see myself as a very good player, but still I easily managed to finish well before the reforms. Egypt, Carthage.. no faction was strong enough (not nearly) to threaten me.

I like to experience more of the game however. On this forum I read a lot about the game after the reforms and that sounds very tasty. How to get there? Will VH/VH help?

A Roman faction (any Roman faction, even if its AI controlled) has to build the Imperial palace, that's it :-)

Getting hold of a big city like Carthage really helps you get them early on.

True, thanks. But I meant to say: how to get a game that is challenging beyond the reforms? Triggering the reforms while you are already winning the game is only making it easier...

The only way to make the game more challenging is to use mods.
I'm using the MoreCities mod better squalor mod and the kill speed mod at the moment and have also edited the dresc_strat to have only the Julii playable gave all the other Roman lands to the rebels, got rid of Egypt, gave Alexandria to Macedon, Croton to the Greeks, placed large rebel armies under the control of the defunked faction leaders, gave cathage the ability to train archers and also Spanish mercs (no more armies of town guard) gave the senate two very large armies added a two more regions (one in Sardinia) fixed the hardy bug and always play on VH/VH. These changes have made the game alot better for me anyway, the extra regions and the better squalor mod combo seem to have given the AI the ability to field full stack armies and even land full stacks in southern Italy and the gauls attack almost every turn, Carthage has four full stacks in Scilia looking like they are going to attack and Macedonia are sending stack after stack to take back Salona. I spend most of my cash every turn retraining troops and now the Germans have just attacked me . Its 238 bc and I only control Italy, Masalia and by the skin of my teeth Salona so if you want a challenge try these few mods out

To get the Marius reforms as Roman you can lick the Senate's butt continually while continuing to conquer, eventually you can take a lot more than 50 provinces, provided you keep the senate happy and don't attack the senate or other Romans and will get the marius reforms.

I've been seeing if I can get the Senate to give me a 1st Cohort but so far to no avail(now 180bc). I have many imperial palaces and can build the top tier post Marian troops in many places and 400k in the bank.

Or you can play the numerous mods though even with these its really too easy unless you play Iron-man rules

Iron Man rules are rules you place on yourself to avoid the (considered)exploits in the game, for example don't bribe anyone and don't sell maps. There is a thread just for this elsewhere on the boards.

Thanks very much for these hints. I have finally seen the Reforms in my latest game as Brutii on Vh/H though, in 248 B.C.
