Default Austrian WWI Rosters and such

    Hi yall.
If you remember from a while ago I asked you to help me find information on a relative from the civil war?
Well, I'm in a similar predicimant. Except I have more information this time.
I have a relative, Josef Palisch, who fought for Austria in WWI. However, I need to find his rank and such. Does anyone know anywhere I can find this without paying someone?
I beleive he was from the village of Saint Micheals or Sankt (Micheal in German).
And I KNOW he was a POW in Russia.
I found his death certificate a long time ago online though, would that help maybe?
    Thanks a billion.

    Hello Capo.

I share your interests in finding out about relatives who saw military service in the past. I didnt see your last thread about your relative from the civil war, but im guessing this was the American Civil War?

If this is the case it would be much easier to find records of soldiers in the Civil War rather than Austrian soldiers in First World War. Unfortunatly the Austrian Military Archives are in a bad way compared with other countries of the First World War, mainly due to the breakdown of the Empire in 1918 when most of the records were destroyed.

However there is good news as there are still plenty of areas which survived the fallout and there own personal records are still available. But it seems that the people that own these records might charge a "nominal" fee for this access or research.

If i was you id contact the Austrian State Archives. Im sure someone there would be willing to look up your case and see what comes up.

Heres a link to the Austrian State Archives address and records of regiments:
    http://maxpages.com/poland/Military_Records_Europe

This site has general infomation about the Austrian Army and lists all the possible regiments your relative could have been in:
    http://www.austro-hungarian-army.co.uk/

Here you can find a great site to help find your relative but only if you know the location of where your relative lived/enrolled into the army. However all the infomation is on microfilm in saltlake city so you may need to beg for free use:
    http://czechcensus.tripod.com/military.htm

Ive also seen several sites which mention church and parish records. So this area may be a good place to look.

Ill be happy to help a little more if you get any more infomation.
