    Thumbs up Uesugi-Clan

    Uesugi da best!

I just gloriously defeated Mori (I killed 1742 men, lost 156) In one year I get 10000 Koku from my lands!
I already defeated: Hojo, Takeda, Oda and Imagawa, None of them had a chance!
I now have Uesugi Kenshin! (19 years, 36 wins, 0 losses)
I already have battlefield ninja's! They are very good!

    I'm new, hello people!

EDIT: Good to look back at my first post

    Way cool

    Welcome to the Org Drisos

BTW, I'm a Mori kind of guy, but Uesugi can be one of the best factions to play. Question - at what level (EZ-Expert) do you play, and what was your strategy?

    Cool Re: Uesugi-Clan

hey, thanks i found this site when i was looking for gaming sites, i'm registered a few days ago I like it here!

that battle with mori was my record!

priest-warriors are one of my favourites!

I like mori too, but have not got much koku in the beginning!

i was playing at normal(not too high, not too low) strategy: much cavalry, quick attack, run after every man!

    bye!

Welcome Drisos, and congratulations with your victories! In due time you will come to appreciate all factions, even Oda who starts out with little koku, a rag-tag territory and the need to rely on Yari Ashigaru at the start of your campaign. Try your hand at them, and report your experiences from time to time.

I still have to persuade myself to start an Oda campaign...
I can't tear myself away from the cav of the Takeda and the archers from clan Uesegi...I also occasionally took the green clan, cause I liked their strategical place on the map...

Welcome to the Org drisos. Also try to win a campaign using just arquebusiers...could be fun

This is the clan I play most as, but I take it much more slowly. I also play on Hard, and start at 1530 (I like to build up from scratch). I find that the first 4-6 turns are the hardest, because you have rebels, Takeda, and Hojo all attacking you. After I fend off all the attacks I consolidate and build up. I take all the rebel provinces behind me, then unleash my wrath upon the Takeda, Hojo, Imigawa, and Oda. Then the rest of the game is basically a mop-up operation. BTW I almost never use cavs. I use Buddhist Monks for attacking, and spearmen/archers with a few buddhists for defending. This has worked for me in most of my games, although the monks can be a bit hard to produce and maintain as they are quite pricey.

In the Uesugi 1530 campaign I find Kozuke to be a poor place for my HQ, so on the first turn I raze everything for extra starting koku and move all my troops into Musashi and rebuild there. Musashi is rich and much easier to defend with the river. Abandoning Kozuke creates a vaccuum and thins out the rebs nearby a little as they move in to occupy it (with one unit, which doesn't threaten me in Musashi). I bribe Shimosa asap, another river province and easy to defend, and this creates a nice defensible front. I then take Kazusa (which provides better emissaries), and bribe Shimotsuke, Hitachi, and Mutsu (Mutsu having a nice collection of troops) as soon as I can afford to (being sure I have additional troops or shinobi to add to the garrisons, to avoid rebellion). I try to bribe Dewa too, as there is a unit of No Dachi there which is handy to have early on. As you described, once I have the Eastern lands lands under my control, I turn my attention on Hojo and Takeda. It is easy to keep them at bay until this point because Musashi is so easy to defend.

I find that sometimes it is good to take a step back and then leap forward 5. I approach many of the campaigns this way now, as oftentimes starting positions are tenuous at best.

Mmm, Oda. My favourite clan because they are always the underdogs in all the campaigns (unless I am taking them).

Winning with arquebus is nearly impossible at expert. It is possible with muskets though,

Would you consider Oda to be more disadvantaged than Tokugawa at the start of the 1580 campaign?

    Thumbs up Re: Uesugi-Clan

Yeah, i've won my campaign with the uesugi clan!
I'm gonna start my second campaign!
with MORI or SHIMAZU i think, or maybe Uesugi at niveau HARD

i bought the game (warlord version) few weeks ago!

i really like talking to guys like jou all(high niveau, higher than me(yet))

ODA in the beginning is fucking hard, i think! when I was uesugi, oda didn't stand a chance against those priest-warriors of the rebels!

    Exclamation Re: Uesugi-Clan

Mithrandir, I like cavalry and archers a lot too, maybe i shall take TAKEDA?

Expert is too hard for me yet, i think

By the way i'm dutch, i have a dutch version, what means arquebus?

I really dislike HOJO because they destroyed my allie takeda last campaign
HOJO, i'll kill you and burn shimosa's castle next campaign!

Deadrunner, i'm dutch, what means m8, thanx and good luck!

maybe i'll take oda and bribe the rebels, then destroy their buildings and get my money back?

adrianII , winning with ashigaru is very hard, i don't use them at all
due to you if you can win with only them!

Ichi, what kind of armies do you usually make and what strategy do you use mostly?

DS, legionary, you probably don't kill much enemies in a battle without cavalry, you nearly can't chase them without it? or don't you mind?
The first turns are very hard with uesugi!
I took first hojo, imagawa alreay attacked my and takeda was my allie(for a short time)

    charge! bye guys!

@drisos, I'm not really good at using Cavalry, so I don't use them (Although I will use my Daimyo to chase routing enemies if he is in the battle. I much prefer Warrior Monks/Archers. They are very versatile, and they can take on almost anything with success. I lure then enemy in with archers, and then charge them on the front and both sides with my monks. I find that there is no need to 'chase' my enemy as he routs, as there is generally not much of an enemy left to chase.

Take it easy (pun intended), you'll get there eventually. By the way, landgenoot, arquebuse means 'haakbus'. It's a 'bus' (gun) mounted on a 'haak' (Old Dutch for 'vorkstok' = 'forked stick') to make for a stable firing platform. And m8 means 'mate', originally Ozzie for 'pal' as in: 'G'day, mate.' Wij zouden zeggen: 'vent' of 'knul'.
AdrianII , winning with ashigaru is very hard (..)
It is very hard in the beginning of a campaign when they have low Valour, but once that picks up it gets easier. And you should use them together with your daimyo and other heavies whenever possible. Good luck, Drisos, and let's hear about your progress!

DS legionary that is quite true, and if you can kill many men without cavalry it would be only a waste!

Warrior Monks are very strong, but i do not use them in defense, cause i like to attack when the enemy attacks me, so my men have to have a strong armor(in defense i use naginata!)

Adrian II , thanx and i hope so (langenoot)

ashigaru with a lot of honour are strong too i think!

"And one should bear in mind that there is nothing more difficult to execute, nor more dubious of success, nor more dangerous to administer than to introduce a new order to things; for he who introduces it has all those who profit from the old order as his enemies; and he has only lukewarm allies in all those who might profit from the new. This lukewarmness partly stems from fear of their adversaries, who have the law on their side, and partly from the skepticism of men, who do not truly believe in new things unless they have personal experience in them."

By posting game-related threads and messages that were deemed by others to be interesting, and also by assisting newbies and transmogrifying them into raving samurai, Vikings and medieval generals...
    I'm listening !
And I'm reading books during the holidays, that's why I'm not around that often. Listen, my friend, since you are so enthusiastic - why don't you switch to Expert mode and tackle a clan like Smimazu or Uesugi in that mode, than post a longer message about it including maybe some screen shots. That'll give worthy samurai something to discuss and it might help raise your status...

Uesegi indeed are the best, imo.

    They come from a very rich area with a huge amount of Koku as well as mines;
    They get Shinano, which can support an armoury, has +1 CAVALRY(!) and is rich;
They get Archers cheap, almost as cheap as Yari Samurai.

Their ability to field entire armies of Samurai of the Kyu and Yari early on means they are deadly to anyone who is stuck with Ashigaru! The only problem for them is the fact that the nearest clans are also pretty well off, with Takeda, Hojo* and Oda not very far away...

*Hojo seem to mind their own business and then trash you out of nowhere.

Yes, the Uesugi have some nicely balanced advantages. What makes it challenging is the competition in the area. If the Hojo get their provinces churning out Koku, the Uesugi are in deep doo-doo. So I always focus on dicing them first, VERY quickly. Hurt them bad before Hojo Ujiyasu shows up (the four star; I think that's his name ...).

In the East, Imagawa is the early game's pain in the butt. He's aggressive, and the only four-star in the area (unless you bribe the rebel Ando Yoshiaki in Mikkawa; incidentally, this is always my first emissarial action when playing Oda). With four stars, any army Yoshimoto personally leads has +2 honor over most other armies. His archers, having been produced in Totomi, are also +1, so archers serving in his personal army are +3. This can be a problem. I've found that inferior archers can beat his if they are on high ground and get to coordinated shooting ahead of Yoshimoto's troops. The best way to deal with them though, is well-coordinated attacks with Yari cav, using your main army as bait, and once the cav have distracted them, as bludgeon. Your daimyo can also cause archers to flee--even Yoshimoto's higher honor archers--if used carefully.

Takeda Shingen shows up around 1536-37. If you are lucky, he is produced in the West, in or near Aki. If you're not, he'll show up in the Kai region. Uesugi Kenshin doesn't come around until 1547 or so, so Shingen can really be a pain sometimes. The nice thing is, the AI rarely seems to put 6-star gens in charge of a large army. I always put my very best troops under my best leaders, and use them most often to anchor critical defensive provinces--not as attackers. Knowing that I don't have to worry about critical points allows me to attack more boldly with lesser generals, eventually raising their command honor to 4 or better.

Never fails when playing Uesugi on expert it seems; as soon as your front line gets to the middle of Oda's territory, Shimazu in right there and it's Uesugi vs. Shimazu for the finale. I like battling it out with him, but sometimes I just have to port raid his back areas, to destroy his mustering points and hamper troop production (and the extra koku is nice). Doing this makes for an easy victory though, so I do it sparingly.

All of the above is based on my experiences with STW-MI-WE. STW original plays very differently. I'm gonna have to dig that out and reminisce a bit, I think. It will be nice to see the original opening movie again.

After reading all these posts in the Dojo forum, I had to go back to STW-WE to get some.

I wouldn't say that the Uesugi's advantage in Samurai Archers are that valuable. From what I glean, it appears that extra honour boosts to SA do not improve their base accuracy. Thus more archers do not necessarily confer a greater advantage.

I've had games with Takeda where I ally with Uesugi (I know, a tad un-historic), and proceed to get a nice rear area of Totomi, Suruga, Sagami and Izu, holding Musashi and Mikawa as river border provinces and Shinano shielding the rest. It kept my lines very short for such a big area. Uesugi, though my ally, had to pack troops in almost all his provinces as they bordered mine.

Long story short, he decided to go suuicidal on me and attacked Musashi with a 4-1 advantage. But seriously, with a bridge battle, 4-1 advantage does not offer much. His faction and clan declined soon after that.

Mori was left, after knocking out Oda. He did a rather surprising thing. He port-raided Owari which I had left empty after advancing on Omi, Mino and Ise. I had not anticipated this action from the AI and brought another large battle at Owari with a 3-1 advantage on Mori side. Sent waves of Naginata and Heavy Cav over the bridge and secured it on a foggy day. It could have been close if not for the enveloping fog. Mori seemed to have forgot about his bridges.

Yes, on Expert, both Mori and Shimazu will port raid Owari, usually over and over again, but never with more that 180 men (3 units) at a time. If they take it, they usually move a large army there immediately. They most often do this when they've conquered the west and are moving to take Kyoto (Yamashiro) to secure the blessing of the Emperor.

Hehe, a cheesy trick I used in one game was to put 3-star gens there with a big army and let Mori attack again and again, raising the generals' command honor very rapidly and easily. I had a lot of great gens in that game.

The only other province I've seen port raided by the AI was Kawachi (Osaka Castle). Shimazu did, when Kawachi represented the closest port to Kyoto.
