Thread: TACTICS AS gAUL

    Default TACTICS AS gAUL

I am tactically fighting field combat with 2 pauses only. One during the main combat phase and one if we have won already to pursue routers.
I have been reasoanably successful (H/H) with Rome and Carthage but with Gaul the Britons are beating me. Any ideas? I have no archers as yet.

Having one main combat pause certainly makes the AI smarter.

Well guard mode for 1 is a great way to keep your men together. As far as the Brits giving you a problem. Isolate them to the island, when I played the brits started at me right away so I took there only city on the mainland, after you defeat a 1 or 2 of there armies you pretty much have won the war of attrition, as Londinum is there only recruitable city as those other 2 towns are weak for population. And Numantia is very important to get your boats from. Recruit out of Trier every turn and let your other cities grow and do'nt be afraid to build farms in those northern territories as they wo'nt reach a high population as you do'nt have the buildings to get a high population and the farmland is'nt good enough to do it, Patavium might be the only city you want to avoid farms in.

I'm guessing the chariots are what are giving you the most problem, just have a warband or 2 in reserve and when they hit your line throw them at the spot they hit you at, the chariots will go down quick and route

Is there anyone out there who can use a Gaul army effectively against other civilised army (human player vs human player) in terms of field tactics? I know the Gauls can still be able to defeat most barbarians army(except for the Spanish) but they are really shitty against Roman and other more advance and civilized armies when they are controlled by human players.

Rush at them, withdraw, use foresters and rush at them before they have time to recover.
    I love barbarian factions.

Look up Starcraft made by blizzard, then you'll understand what is meant. You can think of zerglings as peasants but with a very nasty attack. Cheap, die fast and kill fast and they run fast too.

I was somewhat kidding when I wrote 'zergling rush' but there is some merit to it, especially early on in a campaign. As a general rule be sure to load up on Noble cavalry and archers, preferably Forester Warbands. Chosen Swordsmen units jacked up on Warcry can do quite a alot of damage when charging. Basically thin out the enemy's ranks with the archers and send your best troops and cavalry to take on their flanks.

I'm playing the Gauls at the mo' on M/VH. Yes - take the briton continental city first. As you are their only real neighbour, they will constantly send raiding parties and armies across the channel which is turning into a real pain - so send a fleet up from Numantia to sink them (and try and get large boats as soon as poss' - those small boats aren't much good for anything).

There are lots of rebel cities in the south of modern france - i'm guessing you've taken all of them. Romans - best idea is to take Segesta off the Julii (i'm guessing they've bribed it), then set up a fort system across the top of the peninsula. They will attack your forts, but it gives you time to manouver an army to get to the affected bit. The romans also have a nasty habit of bribing your southern cities - your warbands manning your forts come in handy by marching them into the newly bribed city - taking it back imediately. The Germans are the real pain in the arse at the moment for me, as they have access to your whole eastern border and capital, which is hard to defend - i'm continually knocking back their raiders, whilst building up a decent army with which to march on Trieste. Once i have this, i should be able to fortify the Rhine and keep their womenfolk out! Spain is probably a good place to expand to - that's where i'm going now.

Against Britons on the battlefield - use warbands as line infantry - swords on the flanks, with barbarian cavalry, whatever general units you have, and a couple of skirmisher warbands. Use the skirmishers to break up their line. Use your infantry as a group, warcry together, and then double click them all behind the enemy line so they charge in unison. Use spare units on the edges of your line to flank, use barbarian cav and generals to take out their chariots and any supporting missile units, and then charge the enemy rear.

Can't say i've had too many problems with the British armies - the german spear warbands and the roman heavy infantry are far more challenging.
