I predict the Patriots will crush Philadelphia. Hopefully that statement will jinx them because I really want Philly to win. I am sick of hearing my brother-in-law gloat about his Patriots. I can't stand to hear anymore about how great Coach Belicheck is at game planning, especially when he keeps making the right calls, the lucky s.o.b. . A pox on the Patriots.

Having been born & raised in Southeastern CT, all I can say is.... we're gonna squash the Eagles like bugs!

Although, I'm worried... if the success of the Pat over the past few years was supposed to take the sting of the Red Sox off (God was consoling us), does that mean we're in for a Super Flop?

In all seriousness, while I always pull for the Pats, I would not have minded losing to Cowher last night and I wouldn't mind losing to Andy Reid in two weeks. I'd rather not, but if you gotta lose, better to a class act like them. I would have blown a gasket if we had lost to the Colts though... I want to smack that smug look off of each of the Mannings every time I see them...

I won't play in San Diego, I'm too good to play for such a sucky team... bleah!

I just wish the Packers could be in it...

I'm afraid the Patriots will waste 'em, but I don't care too much either way. Maybe whoever wins will become obscure and let Favre take us to the Super Bowl next year... winning the 40th would be very nice indeed.

"And one should bear in mind that there is nothing more difficult to execute, nor more dubious of success, nor more dangerous to administer than to introduce a new order to things; for he who introduces it has all those who profit from the old order as his enemies; and he has only lukewarm allies in all those who might profit from the new. This lukewarmness partly stems from fear of their adversaries, who have the law on their side, and partly from the skepticism of men, who do not truly believe in new things unless they have personal experience in them."

Don: you are absolutely right, the Football* league enforcers are on their way to JAG's place and normal service will be resumed shortly.

    (*this means association football obviously)

So, just to join in, is the superbowl the end of a knock out cup competition or is it the end of an all-plays all league thing? And there are two leagues aren't there, one serious and one not so good? this is the serious one, right?

    Anyway, get the beers in.

Yes, this is the end of a long knock out competition. If you want the gory details on how we got to where we are, and how the league is organized, let me know, I'd be happy to share.

There are a bunch of minor leagues, like Arena Football, but this is the BIG LEAGUE, the National Football League. Funny, I thought you were making a crack about the Eagles playing in the 'not so good' conference, which would have been funny AND accurate. :)

By the way, is there a tutorial site for Americans on your version of football? I've watched it quite a few times, and while I can follow what's going on in any game no problem (and find it rather exciting) I can't for the life of me figure out how your leagues are organized. It seems like you have a championship every three weeks...

I dont really understand American 'football' but i did see the number 7 for the team that lost to philadelphia get absolutly flattend by some fat guy after a nice little jink past a couple of players. dont think he saw him coming!!! that made me laugh!!!

PS I voted for *whine squeak* protective equipment as although there were some big hits going in, its no where near as nasty as some of the things that go on at the bottom of a ruck in rugby and you still see some equally big hits without the 'armour'

    Its not too complicated.

There are basically four professional leagues arranged in a ladder: Premiership, Championship, first and second. (These used to be called Divisions one two three and four which was a lot better if you ask me. At this rate the Conference (the one below the second division) will be called the Intergalactic Champions Superleague in a few seasons).

All the teams in each league play each other twice, once home and once away, in a season lasting from about August to May. So there are 46 fixtures in each division except the Premiership where there are 38. At the end of each season the top three clibs go up to the next league and the bottom three go down a league. (In fact there are play offs for one promotion spot but never mind). The team that is top of the premiership is the league champion.

Then there is a big knock out competition called the FA cup which winds up with a final in May. There is another knock out cup called the league cup but for some reason no one really takes that seriously.

And that, apart from the European cups, is it. Scotland has its own leagues and cup, which are sort of serious, as does Wales, which are err, more grassroots shall we say.

You would be suprised, basketball and American Football are the biggest US sports over here, there is a strong following for both. Now for me, I know how Football works, I know all the rules I need to know to be able to watch it in complete understanding, but I do not really enjoy it that much - I think it can get bogged down and tiresome at times. However I do watch it every couple weeks when it is on and my fav team is probably the Packers, but that is just because I like Favre. I don't mind the Pats, but they win too much for my liking. (Remember I am a Red Sox and West Ham - thats our football - supporter, so I am not used to supporting winning teams )

Now people over here really don't know a blind bit about baseball, that I find an abomination! Baseball is the greatest game on the planet, imo. Well with rugby, of course.

I never thought I would say this, but...
I agree with JAG! I love the Packers, and find it enormously funny that their ex-coach is now coaching the totally abismal Seahawks here in Seattle.

And you like baseball?!?!? Watch out for the cricket enforcers!

I don't think the Eagles have much of a chance, and I'm really glad that the pats creamed mannings sorry little butt after what he did on Lambeau field.

I urge you to watch the Welsh FA Cup final if you ever get the chance, it's hilarious. It's played in a field-which is backed by a row of terraced houses- in a nondescript valley somewhere, with a crowd of about two hundred.

Not one Philly supporter? *Looks in Gregoshi's direction* Not even after JAG picked the Patriots?

With this Super Bowl, we get to identify the range of the Curse of JAG. It either holds the Boston area exempt or only works in hockey and politics.

The latest line is Philly +7. Maybe Greg is holding out for more points? I think the bookies are going to have to up the spread to at least +10 before much money gets played on Philly. yeah and american football is a pretty lame game, rugby is a real sport, ive never seen an american footballer leave the field with their face torn open and jaw broken.
the other game i like to play is AFL, which is great fun and requires heaps of skill, it is also quite painful alot of the time, like getting taken out trying to get the mark.

Good to see you Jay, yes Atlanta put a serious smack down on the Rams and i loved every minute of it (sorry). I can't stand the St Louis fans around here. When the Falcons made the Rams thier b****es that day was a great moment in my life. Unfortunately Vick got shut down by Philley's D, and made Vick look like a blind man trying to find a corner in a round room.

Jay, when are you coming down to my neck of the woods again. I owe you a beer and a tour of the base. Better make it quick though, I'm going to be a civilian in a few months!!!
