Default total realism makes the game too easy

RTR 5.1 is pretty good but the adding f so many new cities makes the conquer 50 cities and rome way to easy exept wit roman factions the unified rome eliminates the civil war that was poor however but the choise thing was smart but still i think they have to stop adding new provinces or even eliminate some

I agree with you. When playing Parthia for example, you can almost win the game without waging war against anyone, just by taking provinces from rebels.

Eh? Theres only like 15 rebel regions that Parthia can get before running into other factions, and thats mainly because of the added Eastern regions that the AI doesn't do too well with. So that puts you like a 1/3rd through the game, but after that you'll have to start waging war to get your other regions. And don't forget, that also means driving through to Rome to win.

The added regions actually make things harder, by creating super AIs like MTW used to have. Factions will get rolling and conquer more and more land, and thus be in good shape when it comes time for you to face them. For example, here are the top 5 in my game.

#1:Macedon(They've killed Thrace, the Greek Cities, and drove Dacia out of their starting regions. So right now they own all of Greece and the Balkans, and are edging into Russia)

#2: Carthage(They've lost their Iberian regions in the war with Spain, but took all of Sicily and most of North Africa)

#3: Ptolemaic Empire(After intial trouble beating Seleucia they have done a good job driving them back, although Pontus has done much of the conquering and is on the rise)

#4: Rome(After stagnating for awhile Rome conquered all of the Italian Pennisula and is now flooding north against the Gauls, won't be long before they climb the list)

#5: Iberian(Lastly, and interestingly enough is Iberia. With them holding most of Spain they're a force to reckoned with, and it'll be interesting to see if they turn on Gaul)

I'm playing as the Britons, so Gaul/Germania is open to my expansion, but wherever I go i'll soon run into one of the killer AIs, and i'm not sure I could survive a long war with one yet.

My only gripe against RTR at present is they seem to have reacted to the pri/sec bug too strongly in some cases. For instance, the Briton Chariot Archers are useless now. Because of the wide spread formation they don't hit much and because of the lowered attack they kill hardly any. But then, I guess that stuff will be addressed once RTR is updated after the patch.

I dissagree. Right now i'm playing as Gaul, and it is VERY difficult. I have about Briton, Germania, Iberia, Rome, and Carthage at war with me all at the same time. Even with the rebel settlements which were easy to capture, i doubt i will win.

It sounds like you are complaining because your definition of "winning" is too easy. You should set your own goals for what you want to accomplish. In history there is no point where you "win" and it's over.

Well if players had any ambition they wouldnt take rome and instead try and conquer the entire map, it isnt to hard to take 50 anyway, if you want any respect i think you have to aim for total conquest AND THEN take rome.

The mod does what it says itll do make it more realistic, i always thought there were to few cities on the map and these additions make it far more realistic, where for example it took say to cities to rule northern italy 4 or 5 are now required to dominate the area far better and adds longevity to campaigns.

There are more cities in RTR? Wouldn't that create even more siege battles than before? I got pretty sick of fighting siege battles when I was playing RTW.

How often do you get to fight a non-siege battle with RTR? Just curious...

    pretty much thays for sure
i didnt said the fights would be easy but with to good and strong armies you'll have 50 regions within 30-40 turns because they also put the likelyhood of a rebellion down

Can anyone advise on this please? I've upgraded to 5.1 & each end turn is taking 2 mins 30; this seems a bit excessive as normally an end turn takes a couple of seconds. Is it me or has anyone else experienced this?

Also the AI's seem incredibly meek in the 5.1 very little expansion, while playing the Seluc's, Parthia, didn't make a move on either myself or the rebel states to the east...

Also RTR made archer units useless. An archer unit can now waste all it's arrows on a medium unit and only kill like 2-3 people. That is so bs'd.

The thing is you can't just stop at 50 provinces because the whole premise is to promote realism. In reality, Rome did not just stop after establishing 50 provinces and then send messengers telling them how they pwnzed you all and they are the uberest faction there is, and then start all over. You have to try and play it with goals of your own. Such as conquering everything or even simply matching the Roman Empire. This way you'll see just how hard it can be to establish an empire the size of the Roman's at its peak, and how this mod helps to better stress that fact.

My end turn isn't taking 2 mins 30, but it's slower than the Vanilla RTW for a certainty. Some assume it's because of the huge map.

When you start a campaign make sure "follow ai characters" is off and it will take a shorter amount of time.

Even though you change that option it just slightly increases the speed, the end of turn will still take ages to be completed.

Also playing this on VH/VH RTR 5.0 and have Dacia at war with me as well as the above factions. The only hting saving me at present are my awesome cheap Senone slingers which demolish most enemies if given the chance. Just getting my Foresters built in numbers so looking forward to really whacking a few ai armies. Carthage at present is huge militarily but suffers from non upgraded troops(as do all the ai factions)

Thanks for the info on the turn times, I have follow AI off, but I've also got the FOW off too, I'll turn that back on & see if it helps; been trying a Vanilla game, but its just not the same.

i think its a great mod, some1 said something about only figting siege battles. ive only fought 1 major siege and about 20 proper battles in my current campaign. if you sit tight in your cities then the only way ur gonna get to fight is when the enemy lays siege. keep your armies in the field and intercept enemy armies before they get anywhere near your cities. maybe try playing on different difficulty level.

I have to complain somewhat of the mod - I'm actualy now re-instaling RTW because of it.
I like the new regions, I like (some) new units, and I like the one-faction Romans.
But... when I see my cavalry losing 1/2 it's units on a charge agaist the back of a phalnax formation... I just loose my temper.

  24. #24

Default Re: total realism makes the game too easy

That is certainly a problem. RTR has made phalangites too strong. If triarii are attacked from the side or rear they are cut down easily, but phalanxes seemed coated in titanium. The same could be said of the hoplites. But the map work, the skins, worthwhile changes like making triarii buildable from the start, and a strong Carthage make up for some balance problems.
