Default My weakness in advancing my army and attack

(I have posted in Total War.com reguarding to this matter, however I would greatful to different advice from people from different community, thanks )

I simply cannot find myself a situation where I feel comfortable in moving towards to the enemy and attack them.

So far, online, I have been relying on the archers, attract or take out some of their troops, then waiting for them moving towards to me, while I use the melee to defend, when I see their number is small than mine, or broken into pieces for their formation(s), I would then advanced my melee troops for the final attack.

This has work find but I finding myself quite weak to oftern rely on this method in battle, so recently I have tried advancing forward and be the attacker, but it result in defeat, as the other person would play the same game as I was doing before, waiting for me to move in, and reply archers to attack/attract me.

Is there any advice that you guys could provide which might enlighten me in the method in advancing my army towards to the other troop?

    Thanks in advance.

you need to be more dynamic mate, doing the same thing everytime isnt gonna work. also faction selection could be an issue, some factions i.e the romans are massively overpowered in smaller games cos the urban cohorts are allmost impossiblt to beat and the relatively cheap. maybe play as them for a bit, be more aggressive and just see what happens :) thats what i do anyways, best way to learn.

Advance spears covered by archer fire, hold the enemy in place with those spears, then move cavalry behind them and attack their rear. Instantaneous routing.

    Thanks guys.

Just last night after this post, a real life mate and me were experimenting with a few different things online; we played against each other and against other online players. The problem is, I don’t find that there is too much creativity in terms of tactics in the game; the most creative part was more on unit and fiction selections to counter each other.

Also, I realise most people seems to be using the same method, they just camp up on the hill, then his archers fight against mine, once that done, only then the melee advance.

This happen pretty much 9 out of 10 games we played.

The only creative tactics I have met online was that, one German and the Gaul fiction combo, where the German would use one unit of archer only, then the rest are spearman, then the Gaul was 100% horsemen.

Because there were so many horses, even we had strong melee to fight against them, their impact for each visit has not only done enough damage, but also break up the formation.

Usually I consider a player who pick only one type of units is a bad idea, but they worked very well and certain was in the control of the game, as at the end, I saw them charging at us at the same time, good team work and I think they must have played as a team before.

In MTW as the Turks I once took half the map using an endless army of just Ghazi Infantry. It ruled.

allways take at least 2 onagers, that way when people camp on a hill bombard them untill they move :)

yes, onagers work most of the time.
you could also try the testudo fromation as a roman faction, you move much slower and tire faster, but not as much missle casualties as you would just marching.
I have been told that testudo is buged, but haven't really figured out in what way it's buged...
and lot's of people play the way you play(ed) just waiting on a hill...very irritating, as a marching army you could try baiting them with HA's.

but in the end you will lose lots sof men marching towards an (archer ) army.

when you get in to a fire ball throwing contest as you called it, you could sacrifice one of your cavalry units to destroy the onagers, your opponent will maybe send some units to deal with the threat. in that time you could try your full scale attack with your advancing army.
and well if that doesn't work... you should welll just try to advance your whole army as fast as you can towards the enemy.
you will lose men, but there simply is no othger way ( that I can think of ) to advance versus onagers without losing men.

Cavalry cavalry cavalry. Battles are made and broken by cavalry. I had 3 desert cavalry soldiers route an entire company of Hoplite spearmen just by charging from the back. It was beautiful to see.

Thats one thing that reinforced how the combaination of the spearman and horses spuressed me.

So from your view, all the units is to built up for that one moment of your horseman franking them hey?
