Just a simple question:
How many provinces do you lose in a game??
(count every time you completely lose control over a province, relieved sieges don't count)
Me... None to two times... Crazy, I know...

You came from nothing,
You are going back to nothing...

Nothing!!!

As the HRE, Novgorod or Poles I might lose 3 or 4 over the course of a campaign. As the rest maybe 1 or 2.

More seriously, I usually try not to take a province til I'm sure I can hold it. Sometimes I raid first and if there looks like a long siege ahead, I'll withdraw until the enemy comes back outside, then I go in with a small army to defeat the garrison in the field, making sure there are no survivors to hole up again, then invade properly... cuts down on those losses through siege attrition.

There's usually a strategical withdrawal when the horde arrives, as it still happens to me to forget to prepare..... But that's all, usually. When playing France, allowing Brits to siege some provinces early on is unavoidable, but I make sure they pay the price(reverse is true if I play the Brits).

Having a view upon every point is better
I rarely use more than 3 or four privinces in a campaign, and then never any of thosei start with.

In my core empires I like to expand quickly to start with, then carefully, minimising borders and only taking what I know I can keep. There's nothing like holding Greece and Bulgaria and watching western European crusaders slowly dying of cholera in Hungary![]()
But, I also enjoying raiding and pillaging the territories of factions who've really annoyed me (you know, the Sicilians sink your ship for no reason, that sort of thing). I'll send an emissary behind their lines, find the nearest rebel stack or disloyal army, bribe it and set about rampaging through their provinces, all defended by 100 peasants and a dog. Take 'em, rip down every improvement and move on. Sometimes invading and having them retreat to the castle is enough to wreck their infrastructure. They take the province back (or have a huge loyallist rebellion) - but who cares! I've slighted the wells and ploughed the fields with salt...
Works great on the Spanish: as that huge crusade approaches, go buy the rebels in Portugal, sack Castile and rip down the Chapter House! Love it. And of course, as a Muslim faction, you can always Jihad to these places later on, getting excellent conquering armies for nothing!
