Default A What Would You Do Question

This is purly a hypothetical situation that has no connections to the real world.

The army your apart of is crushed in a battle. You lead a division of men that you know can dig and screen the rest of you fleeing army. This can give it time to regroup, resupply, and fight on. You have two choices, flee and hope someone else screens you, or you dig and fight knowing it will cost you your life, and the losses among you men will be 100%. What would you do?

I know at least I would dig in, mostly because I have always wanted a death such as that, protecting the greater good.

I don't know. I suppose it really depends if someone I cae about will be ruined and/or killed if we fail to fight this regaurd action. Then again, I suppose even that won't gaurantee holding the line.

You might die anyway if you flee, so atleast you have a fighting chance, remember, nothing is garunteed on the battle field. Many many times the most impossible situations in warfare have come out with the strangest of results.

Gimme a gun, ammo and some AT missiles cause we are gonna give 'em hell before giving up this pile of mud!

Once we expend all our ammo I think I would surrender, making a bayonet charge is not what it used to be....

I would fight to the last man.
And once the ammo is out,
a glorious death leading the charge!

Neither - I'd screen them for as long as I could, before falling back in good order - with sections retreating in turn and providing cover.

I would not give an order would result in the complete annihilation of the men under my command. If it came to a point where I could not proceed any further without sacrificing some men, I would ask for volunteers to stay with me.

Run, run, run. Though I admit I am a bit bias - well a lot really - as you all know what I think of the army.
GARCIN: I "dreamt," you say. It was no dream. When I chose the hardest path, I made my choice deliberately. A man is what he wills himself to be.
INEZ: Prove it. Prove it was no dream. It's what one does, and nothing else, that shows the stuff one's made of.
GARCIN: I died too soon. I wasn't allowed time to - to do my deeds.
INEZ: One always dies too soon - or too late. And yet one's whole life is complete at that moment, with a line drawn neatly under it, ready for the summing up. You are - your life, and nothing else.

Dig in. I don't think I am any braver than the next man, and I'd much rather live to a ripe old age than die gloriously now, but I know I couldn't live the rest of my life with the thought that I had run away and left the others in the soup.

Retreat to the comfort of my couch and watch Star Trek and eat chocolate cookies until the MPs find me and arrest me for cowardice and desertion.

That or dig in and poison gas the whole bloody lot of them right down to the last man, woman and child.

    Indeed

I would stand and fight, I couldn't live with myself If I knew that by fleeing like a coward other men would die.

if i believe that sacrificing ourselves would save the rest of the army and there's a good chance we'll get killed anyways if we flee. i wouldn't dig in, i'd go for the charge. the last-ditch tactic of the defeated. hoping to catch them by surprise and stall their advance a bit longer. at least i would like to think thats what i'd do. but never having been in such a situation, and having heard that a lot of times people behave differently under crisis situations than they think they would. who knows, maybe if i'm thrust in such a situation i might forget the honeyed words i currently type, and haul a** like Demosthenes at Charonea.

Probably neither. Eclipse class all the way.

I do love an Impstar though...

I would ask for volunteers. I wouldnt feel right ordering people to their death, plus to hold of an enemy that just killed thousands of your men needs brave men. I would fight to the death and kill as many bastards as I can before they take me. Im all about fighting to the death, fighting with the odds against men.

If I knew I was totally going to die, I'll fall back if not outright run. But if I knew I had a fighting chance of doing something good for the army as a whole I'd call for people to go with me and fight. Not to the death, mind you,,,
